Re: The New 2019 Rules

Well, we are 2 weeks into the "New Rules." Who is making a conscious effort to play by the new rules? What new rules have impacted your play? The obvious one is leaving the flag stick in the hole. In my three 2019 rounds I have left the flag in virtually 100% of the time. A few times I have reflexiv...

Re: 2018-2019 Winter Support Group

This afternoon we are predicted to reach the highest temperature for the next 10 days ... 34 degrees (f). Despite the cool temperatures, we do not have a single bit of snow on the ground. If one can get a tee into the grass, a 350 yard drive should be fairly routine. Just make sure it is going in th...

Re: 3rd Annual Frozen Balls Challenge - 2018-2019

Still don't know the rules and not wanting to win and have to deal with the trophy, but went out today at 42 degrees - colder than my norm but yesterday was washed out and next weekend doesn't look good so I thought I'd give it a try. Really wasn't too bad until last 4 holes when the wind kicked up...

Re: N.B.A.

You remember when the Pistons had Isiah Thomas, and Rodman, and Bill Lame-beer? Such a rivalry with Magic and Kareem's Lakers in the late 80s. Remember when Magic and Isiah used to kiss each other before each game? Eww! The Lakers won in '88 but Detroit came back to win the next year, which was Kar...

I first became aware of the NBA in 1962, the year we moved to the Boston area. No NBA noise in Appleton, Wisconsin, back then. Just the Packers and Braves. My formative years involved the Bill Russell led Celtics beating down Wilt and the Sixers and then LA and Jerry West every spring. Those were th...

Re: WTF did you buy today?

Speaking of this, who uses range finders, vs watches, vs cellphone gps or something else? I use a dedicated GPS (an older model Garmin G3). Uses re-chargeable AA batteries. Garmin give free updates and there is no annual fee. Gives me front, back and middle of the green. I use a GPS because I am ba...

Yes. We are in the deep freeze for a couple days. If this trend continues, the Mitten becomes a rock hard ice ball and any snow stays around until April. While I remain hopeful, things do not look good.

3rd Annual Frozen Balls Challenge - 2018-2019

Looks to be a two way race between LB and DougE. Both are golf maniacs when it comes to marginal weather. Gbogey has been kind of quiet as have several other potential contenders. We are not even going to consider the left coasters and our southern brethren, who think 50 degrees is hardship golf bec...

Re: 2018-2019 Winter Support Group

What a nice winter so far. I have played more golf since the solstice than any recent year. I have not even had to consider the course of last resort, Huron Hills, and their infamous "flat seven." We have had a total snowfall since 11/1 of about an inch and a half. Yes, right now it is 20 (f) with f...

Re: WTF did you shoot today?

I played Tuesday. It was "winter perfect": 50 degrees, calm, and partly sunny. Yes, the fairways were a swamp and the greens fuzzy. Who cares, I was walking the golf course and swinging a club. Scene looking back at #10 tee. Note how green everything is except the trees. IMG1.jpg Newport Cup 2019 - ...

Re: Anyone seen this in NYC or other large cities?

The annoying thing I’m seeing around places, Austin and Atlanta in particular, are the little electric “Bird” scooters that you rent by the hour. There are piles of them on street corners. Ann Arbor, too. Apparently, one can make a career (short term, likely) of picking up the scooters at night, re...

Re: 2019 Newport Cup - sjduffers & GBogey - Pay Attention

The ages ran from 64 (me at the time) to 20. Everyone except one other guy was 50 or so and younger. Frankly, as an 8.6 or whatever index I had at the time, I was the worst, shortest and oldest golfer. I could have handled that except I was in a "slump" or down period so not only was I the worst, I ...

2019 Newport Cup - sjduffers & GBogey - Pay Attention

Assuming the Sand Trap once again puts on a "Newport Cup" event, both of you should consider "applying." "Iacas" will announce the application process soon, if he decides to do this again. It is a cool golf experience as long as you are okay with playing a competitive event with a bunch of nice guys...

Re: 2019 PGA Tour thread

I have left the flag in for the past several rounds. When I start to get close to the hole (say 20 feet and in) the presence of the flag stick is a bit of a distraction. I believe the flag stick helps as "sjd" outlined and assume having a flag stick in the hole will no longer be a distraction once I...

Your All Time Easiest Hole?

One of the few features of "Skygolf360" that is fun is "Stats per Course". I went back 10 years and looked at all the courses where I had 10+ scores. Which hole played the easiest (or more correctly, least difficult)? The penultimate hole is #7 at Huron Meadows. It is a par 3 that plays about 140 ya...

Re: January Golf!

Quite happy with my strategy today. A local course, Lake Forest, is hard to walk because of the long distances from green to next tee. I waited until 2pm when few would figure there is enough time to slog 18. We have a bit of light at 5:30. I rolled into the parking lot at 1:50pm. Maybe 10 cars in t...

Putting out of longish grass

I have fiddled around with putting from various lies. Part of the experiment involved hitting a bit down, to get the ball to sort of pop up and over the grass. Seems to work although I am not sold on it yet.
