Re: Handicaps and Course Difficulty

The problem with harder courses is that a small mistake is sometimes really penal, so when you are saying that you were throwing 3-4 shots per round, it could mean for example a shot into a hazard that was avoidable with better course management or 2-3 putts that were avoidable by targeting a better...

I will be in Portugal for a couple weeks. While I will likely have internet access, I may find more interesting things to do than hang out on the internet. If I am even less involved than normal in our golf discussions, I have a reasonable excuse. Bon dia!!

Re: WTF did you shoot today?

On the fairway hit question, undoubtedly yes. The term fairway does not appear in the Rules of Golf. The term used is "closely mown area" and the fringe definitely qualifies as such. As for your 12, I have you beat with a 13 recently and just a couple of days ago, I managed to score a 10 on a par 5 ...

Re: WTF did you shoot today?

I am in Hawaii (Big Island) right now and you may have heard that hurricane Lane is approaching dangerously close. It was a cat 5 just a few days ago and is now weakening to a cat 2 and probably cat 1 or tropical storm soon. Nonetheless, with a radius of more than 200 miles, it is bringing with it l...

Re: Random golf thoughts

Doug, maybe you are becoming a bit complacent with your own game, expecting an easy win by 7-8 strokes as you say and in turn fail to focus adequately on your own shots. Things like club selection, target selection, aiming accuracy and even swinging (slower swing, coming out of the shot earlier, etc...

Re: The Tiger Thread

It sure was fun to watch! Think about it: another half inch for that putt to fall in and a little less pace for that putt to not lip out and we are talking about a playoff, even wih the drive on 17 and all the missed fairways. That's pretty incredible.

Re: 2018 summer support group

Maybe I come off like an old woman, but hey, I am still getting carded when I buy beer. That's because this old woman doesn't have a leathery face from habitually going out and standing in the summer sun for five plus hours at a time, waiting to hit golf shots. Yeah, I still get carded too. But not...

Re: Poison Ivy - What would you do?

I've gotten it once, playing golf and it's not fun. It would definitely be an unplayable for me, assuming 2 club lengths is enough relief. Going inline with the flag usually doesn't work in this situation: it only gets you deeper in the woods...

Ouch! Who knew? The place looks so nice, and tough, but inviting somehow... I can't fault you for having this reaction, especially to the trip back to the city after a long day of walking in the heat without enough water. Rest up and feel better.

And "she" is someone I have never heard of: unreal... ETA: She didn't get any deeper than -31, but no matter, it is...

Well done Doug! We knew we could count on you. Re: WTF did you shoot today?

I scored 74 (+4) today, with 13 pars, 1 birdie, 3 bogeys (including a 3-putt GIR) and a double: 3.8 differential. Probably one of my best round ever, especially with the short game. But the most surprising thing to me is that my handicap index is dropping like a rock: it's going to be 7.2 on the 1st...

Re: How to start the downswing?

For me, it's a small hip slide/bump to the left, followed by the hip turn (while the slide continues, moving the weight forward). I am completely passive with the arms, I think: they just follow. A long time ago, before I had any real idea of how to swing, I always started with the arms, but it was ...

I'm in another funk. Too much golf I think. (12 of the last 14 days.) Starting to make some sloppy swings. Thin iron shots. Partially skulled a flop yesterday. Lost driver consistency and distance. Confidence falling. Too many freakin' people out there. Lots of waiting and rhythm breaking. The mid-...

Hearing about other people's summer funk makes me feel better. I am the opposite. Summer is the best time for golf, so it saddens me to hear it is not the best time for you. I personally am playing the best golf of my life right now, with only 2 rounds in the 80s (80 and 81) in the dozen of rounds ...

The rule 14-5, like most rules, is not based on intent, just on an objective fact: hitting a moving ball results in 2 strokes. Simple.

Re: 2018 PGA Tour Thread

I disagree Mr Fish. The rule 14-5 says: ... must not make a stroke at a moving ball. Penalty is 2 strokes. It couldn't be more clear. The caveat in there is the part about see rule 1-2 for a ball purposely stopped or deflected by player or caddie. EXCEPT that rule 1-2 explicitly says if there is any...
