Re: The New 2019 Rules

In my view, it's really simple. If the flagstick doesn't lean towards you making the space for the ball to drop too small, or the wind doesn't batter the flagstick back and forth, just leave it in: it's always an advantage in any of those other circumstances, close or far. Let me explain. From a dis...

Re: WTF did you buy today?

I did find a lost (yellow) AVX ball a couple of weeks ago. I have played with it for several rounds and it still looks like new: how? I don't know. I like it ok around the greens, but it feels odd on contact, especially with the driver. Also, I think it doesn't fly as far as the other 2 kinds of bal...

Whoa, you look way younger than that. In my mind's eye, at least.
Well, I feel younger in my mind, too. :) Thanks for the comment man, I appreciate that!

Re: 2019 Newport Cup - sjduffers & GBogey - Pay Attention

Well, I am turning 60 in a couple of months, and so I feel like I would be a second version of you. Except I live in Northern California, not close to Hollywood at all. Like I said, it's something to consider and I gave it some thought last time but I was barely under a 10.0 index then. I am more re...

Re: 2019 Newport Cup - sjduffers & GBogey - Pay Attention

I don't know man. It's tempting: we'll see. The video thing kinda freaks me out... The travel may be ok, although I doubt I would be driving more than 11 hours from San Jose to the Phoenix area. In golf terms, I would be massively outdriven, with my puny 220-230 drives (maybe more at Phoenix's altit...

Re: Your All Time Easiest Hole?

My lowest average score on a hole (played a good number of times) in the last 4 years is 5.1. It's on a straight par 5 (510 yards), with no bunkers in the fairway or greenside. It is some 50 yards or so out of reach in 2 for me, most times, although I remember going over the green once after a unico...

Re: Skygolf360 - RIP???

Doug, I don't know for sure as I don't use the Grint, what I would imagine that posting your last 20 rounds on that site would make your handicap current. You probably don't need full details either, but you may want to post the rounds with those details in order to get accurate stats going forward?

Re: 2019 PGA Tour thread

Ok. I'll bite. Flag-in putting is making putting easier. Under almost any circumstance, the flag should be left in. Those circumstances are: the flag is leaning towards the golfer and effectively blocking the ball from falling in, or the flagstick is battered by the wind, so that the angle of the ma...

Re: December Golf!!!

Today, I shot a decent 80 (+8) in 20+mph sustained winds, gusting to 35-40mph: the ball was oscillating on the greens at times. The actual temp was in the mid 50s, but it sure felt colder than that. Anyway, that's my meager contribution to December golf and my last round of 2018. Happy New Year, guy...

Re: 2018 Fall Support Group

I haven't played golf in the last few days, because of the terrible air quality we have in the Bay Area, as the Camp Fire near Chico, CA continues to burn. It's such a devastation! I've heard that we have the worst air quality on the whole planet right now, worse than India and China!

Re: WTF did you buy today?

That, I just don’t understand. Not saying you’re crazy Doug, but I don’t get it at all. I take the cover off of my putter on the first tee, store it in my bag and don’t put it back on until I get to the car. I have a putter well in my bag and the head does not cling against all the other clubs, so I...

Re: Cold Weather and Hands

Activated charcoal pouches that stay warm for 6-8 hours. Hold them on and off in between shots. Actually, I don't wear a glove at all, so when it's cold, I alternate the pocket where I hold the pouch, warming both hands... The only time I wear 2 gloves is in the rain: then, they are rain gloves! :)

Re: WTF did you buy today?

I second the Sport LT recommendation. Not leather but guaranteed waterproof for 1 year, around $100 and really nice looking. They sit a little lower than the Contours (which is where I was coming from before those) and I prefer that. I’ve got them in white (and silver) and also in black (and silver)...

Re: Random thoughts

I agree with what you said in the first paragraph. I don't play in the small jackpots (say 15 mill) because it's not that thrilling to think about what you can do with it. It's pretty straightforward really, so why pay for that dream? In the biggest ones (say above $300M, so that you are talking abo...

Re: The New 2019 Rules

Don't forget that the pros (and everyone else) can already leave the flag in when putting and chipping from just off the green, and when they are putting from close, they nearly all take it out, despite the stats saying leave it in. Don't think the pros have the best golf IQ: they don't necessarily ...

Re: The New 2019 Rules

The flag stick in only helps good putters. Bad putters will miss the hole the same as before. Good ones can hole out a little more frequently by carrying more speed and minimizing the break around 6-10ft. It won't save any time (the stated purpose) until everyone realizes that they should leave the ...

I agree with both of your posts in principle. But, I would like to point out that it is still around 90 at the high, and that one can easily play golf until 6:30 or 7:00 around these parts (Northern California), so it's not like you are forced to endure: just sayin'! :)

Re: Handicaps and Course Difficulty

The other issue is likely more mental - it is pretty easy for me to think that I can turn 2DB's in bogeys or bogeys into pars - it's much more difficult to imagine turning more pars into birdies. I don't know why - I think it's just amateur golfer mentality where I probably give luck too much credi...

Re: Handicaps and Course Difficulty

The problem with harder courses is that a small mistake is sometimes really penal, so when you are saying that you were throwing 3-4 shots per round, it could mean for example a shot into a hazard that was avoidable with better course management or 2-3 putts that were avoidable by targeting a better...

Re: WTF did you shoot today?

On the fairway hit question, undoubtedly yes. The term fairway does not appear in the Rules of Golf. The term used is "closely mown area" and the fringe definitely qualifies as such. As for your 12, I have you beat with a 13 recently and just a couple of days ago, I managed to score a 10 on a par 5 ...

I am in Hawaii (Big Island) right now and you may have heard that hurricane Lane is approaching dangerously close. Re: Random golf thoughts

Doug, maybe you are becoming a bit complacent with your own game, expecting an easy win by 7-8 strokes as you say and in turn fail to focus adequately on your own shots. Things like club selection, target selection, aiming accuracy and even swinging (slower swing, coming out of the shot earlier, etc...
