Re: 3rd Annual Frozen Balls Challenge - 2018-2019

Of course DougE and Beef are solid contenders and deserving of the win, but I’ll argue that Gobey’s 75 in 42F weather with wind and mud is a solid entry too and I’ll give him my vote. 👍

Re: 2018-2019 Winter Support Group

Btw, California voted to do away with PST last November, so this could be the last time we went to PDT a few days ago. But it needs to be approved by the federal government and Trump might just say no just to piss CA off, lol... Is that so? Wow. Maybe there is hope. There probably isn't. Anyways co...

Re: 2018-2019 Winter Support Group

Some counties in Indiana don't change, either. Really? That sure makes it somewhat complicated. Wow! Agreed. There are already 2 states that I know of that don't change times twice a year: Arizona and Hawaii.

Re: WTF did you shoot today?

Ditto: the courses around here are super saturated. Some of them have areas where the whole fairway width is marked GUR (due to casual water). If you are in there, you drop on the side, in the rough, where it's a little better because of the lateral slope of the fairway! I have moved up to the white...

It's not "pre-Madonna" (that would just be a pre-80s reference, I would think), but "Prima Donna" (aka First Lady, or Diva). Just sayin'...

Re: What Do You Carry in Your Pockets During a Round?

It would be an interesting experiment to have a stranger re-arrange what and where we carry stuff while playing golf. Make me, Fish and Beef carry an extra ball in our right pocket. Attach gpickin's phone to his bag. Take away SJ's hankie. Take the spare balls away from MattF and GBogey. Place all ...

Re: What Do You Carry in Your Pockets During a Round?

Here are my habits and don't make me change that or I'll be flustered for a while... I typically have 5-6 tees in my right front pocket: 1 really tall one for "tee it high and let it fly" driver with wind in the back typically, 2 normal long length for the driver, and 2-3 short ones for the par 3s o...

Re: 2018-2019 Winter Support Group

So I'm kind of obsessed with this 'breaking 80' thing, which might be inhibiting my chances of actually doing it (the obsession thing). Anyway, I browsed another golf site (Sandtrap maybe?) and someone brought up the book 'Extraordinary Golf' (Fred Shoemaker) as one of the key things that pushed th...

Re: Course Staff and Rangers

At all the munis where I play, none of the rangers (or marshals) are empowered to do anything about slow play: even when there is a hole open in front of a slow group, they can never make them move and skip a hole, they can only have a talk and that is even too much. I guess the expectation from the...

Re: When is it TOO Cold?

Way back when I lived in France, the coldest I had been in was maybe -10C, so still positive in Fahrenheit, about 10 I guess. I wouldn't want to be in colder weather than that, although I did make an exception once, in Ottawa when it was -25F: I had to get out because that was the end of a week wher...

They should call their gloves Handjoys.
Hmmm telling my wife I want 2 handjoys for my birthday and that I can get them somewhere else for $20 might not go over so well. At least my couch is comfortable.

Re: 2019 PGA Tour thread

There are likely millions out there who end up on their back foot who should actually try to swing like Choi. They'd probably get better results than they do slicing the ball. My thoughts exactly, and not just ending on the back foot, but starting the swing leaning towards the target and transferri...

This will probably shock you, but I am aware of Lonzo Ball thanks to SNL and it's Lavar Ball impression! :) In truth, I don't follow basketball much (and certainly can't play it), except that in the last few year, I have watched the Warriors' post season and now keep an eye on them and LeBron, witho...

Re: The New 2019 Rules

In my view, it's really simple. If the flagstick doesn't lean towards you making the space for the ball to drop too small, or the wind doesn't batter the flagstick back and forth, just leave it in: it's always an advantage in any of those other circumstances, close or far. Let me explain. From a dis...

Re: WTF did you buy today?

I did find a lost (yellow) AVX ball a couple of weeks ago. I have played with it for several rounds and it still looks like new: how? I don't know. I like it ok around the greens, but it feels odd on contact, especially with the driver. Also, I think it doesn't fly as far as the other 2 kinds of bal...

Well, I am turning 60 in a couple of months, and so I feel like I would be a second version of you. Except I live in Northern California, not close to Hollywood at all. Like I said, it's something to consider and I gave it some thought last time but I was barely under a 10.0 index then. I am more re...

I don't know man. It's tempting: we'll see. The video thing kinda freaks me out... The travel may be ok, although I doubt I would be driving more than 11 hours from San Jose to the Phoenix area. In golf terms, I would be massively outdriven, with my puny 220-230 drives (maybe more at Phoenix's altit...

Re: Your All Time Easiest Hole?

My lowest average score on a hole (played a good number of times) in the last 4 years is 5.1. It's on a straight par 5 (510 yards), with no bunkers in the fairway or greenside. It is some 50 yards or so out of reach in 2 for me, most times, although I remember going over the green once after a unico...

Doug, I don't know for sure as I don't use the Grint, what I would imagine that posting your last 20 rounds on that site would make your handicap current. You probably don't need full details either, but you may want to post the rounds with those details in order to get accurate stats going forward?

Ok. I'll bite. Flag-in putting is making putting easier. Under almost any circumstance, the flag should be left in. Those circumstances are: the flag is leaning towards the golfer and effectively blocking the ball from falling in, or the flagstick is battered by the wind, so that the angle of the ma...

Re: December Golf!!!

Today, I shot a decent 80 (+8) in 20+mph sustained winds, gusting to 35-40mph: the ball was oscillating on the greens at times. The actual temp was in the mid 50s, but it sure felt colder than that. Anyway, that's my meager contribution to December golf and my last round of 2018. Happy New Year, guy...

I haven't played golf in the last few days, because of the terrible air quality we have in the Bay Area, as the Camp Fire near Chico, CA continues to burn. It's such a devastation! I've heard that we have the worst air quality on the whole planet right now, worse than India and China!

That, I just don’t understand. Not saying you’re crazy Doug, but I don’t get it at all. I take the cover off of my putter on the first tee, store it in my bag and don’t put it back on until I get to the car. I have a putter well in my bag and the head does not cling against all the other clubs, so I...
