Re: driving range confessions

I typically find that courses that include range balls in the green fees are either very nice or very crappy. There's no happy medium to be found there. I've yet to run across a course that charges by the hour. However, I will say that my favorite practice facilities are the ones that have a large n...

Re: driving range confessions

That's kind of funny. If I really need to hit "one more ball", I'll grab a ball out of my bag. There are usually a couple in there that I don't ever intend to play on a course.

Re: Severe downhill lie to a distant uphill target

Thanks for the analysis, Mr. Fish. When the ball is above my feet, I usually choke up and take a normal swing. The drawback of this approach is that, since the toe of the club has a tendency to get stuck in the turf, I actually have more of a tendency to push the ball with this scenario than I do to...

Re: Severe downhill lie to a distant uphill target

Interestingly, I've never been able to accomplish a draw (or hook) when my feet are below the ball just as I've never been able to accomplish a fade (or slice) when my feet are above the ball. Additionally, my draws (or hooks) always (and I mean always) have a low trajectory with lots of roll, so I'...

Re: Food - Fresh Buffalo Mozzarella

That was hilarious. If I'm not mistaken, mozzarella cheese is protected by one of those protected location of origin treaties that the United States doesn't recognize (and that pisses me off). I hate eating Black Forest Ham from Iowa, drinking Boudreaux wine from California, or mozzarella cheese fro...

Re: Putting confessions

When I was fitted for my putter, there were really only two parameters - putter length and how I aimed. It turned out that I aim much better with a plumber's neck putter than with other types, so that's what I have used ever since. BTW - one thing I could never do is a putter with an Odyssey two ba...

Re: golf is hard

I've found that when I walk, I find myself waiting for the group in front of me consistently even if they are in a cart. I think my biggest pitfall is that I'm a very fast walker. That could contribute to how quickly I tire when walking 18. The other pitfall is that carts are part of the culture dow...

Re: golf is hard

I read somewhere a few years back when I was into that sort of things that using a push cart didn't vary that much in terms of calories spent in a round vs carrying a bag. There was indeed a difference like 1500 vs 1800 calories for an average course. Maybe more or less depending on the course. Eit...

Re: Swinging an upside-down club

They do make training sticks for this, which seems silly since you get the same effect from inverting a club that is already in the bag. As far as warming up goes, I have a club weight that I use that straps onto the lower part of the club. It has the same effect as holding two clubs except it's eas...

Re: golf is hard

I've talked about this before. The whole process of playing golf is difficult. Everything about it. From walking 18 holes to ensuring that one's scores are correct without succombing to the temptation of cheating, none of it is easy. There are times when I tell people unfamiliar with the game that a...

Re: Hurricane watch

I have colleagues in Port Lavaca and Aransas Pass, TX. The good news is that they were forced to evacuate. They are all okay, but they were expected to return to work this morning at 8:00 since we technically run emergency communications in those areas. I don't think that's gonna happen.

Re: Turning properly

I know the feeling gbogey. When the driver isn't working, sometimes it takes a miracle. And sometimes a miracle isn't even possible. Questions I get a lot include stuff like "how they hell did you shoot an 85?" Two stroke and distance penalties is like adding another hole to the scorecard.

Re: Rules question

I think this is an interesting case study on human behavior in general. When things happen that we don't expect, we wait for some kind of leader to step forward and lead the way. Golf is interesting because there is no such leader the vast majority of the time, and the result is that we have a rule ...

Re: The Grumble Thread

That is sad, Doug. There are fixtures on the course that we kind of all just get used to after a while, and when they are gone, it feels like we lose a part of ourselves. There was a starter named Bob at one of my regular courses for years and years. Bob was always old to me, but he was one of the c...

Re: Strange Things During A Round

There is a twosome that I occasionally get paired with here in Phoenix. They are not the most refined gentlemen on the planet, but I like them. They tend to wear ratty tee shirts and dirty jeans onto the course, and they talk with a rural lilt that I find kind of cool. The best part about these guys...

Re: Solar Eclipse

I'm getting a little tired of hearing about the eclipse. That, and I can't get the Bonnie Tyler song out of my head. It won't end. Blah. There was a total eclipse in Bismarck, ND back in 1979. I was four years old. I looked right at the dang thing and said "Mom, why is the moon moving into the ...

Re: Less "borrow"

There is some science between missing on the high or low side on a putt. Missing on the low side is a complete miss. The ball has no chance to go in. But missing on the high side still gives the ball a chance. The second part of this, and I have explained this to my nephew numerous times, is that wh...

Prime Day was awesome. There must have been at least 20 awesome deals that I just missed out on. They did have my favorite underwear on sale for the same price I paid for them six months ago. I just missed out on that deal, too. There was some good stuff in there, though. I just didn't get to it in ...

So I played 4 holes this morning w/ my normal glasses on because it was cloudy. I noticed that it only bothers me when I'm putting because I'm holding my face straight down to the ground my glasses (if they have slid too far down my nose) will just swing free from my ears. Then I have to push them ...
