Re: WTF did you shoot today?

41/44 from blues at Neshanic. Not bad. Played with Ms Beef and a couple of dudebroguys, stereotype guys--whale on it with the driver but pretty inept at everything else. I felt like DougE out there, i.e. outplaying some younger guys with humble, old man restraint-golf. Couple more practices and I'l...

p.s. a 78 is darn good when nothing falls. Your standards are too high!! ;)
I know and I wasn't really unhappy with the score, just exasperated with bad bounces when I was striking it really well and then the bladed shot ends up perfect.

Re: WTF did you shoot today?

Golf is cruel, totally cruel. This is how today's round started: 1. Good drive, good 9i but needed an 8i, chip, make nice curling putt for par. 2. Good drive but slipped on the approach shot. Even though I hit the shot on one leg almost falling down, hit it to pin high just 30 yards left. Pitched to...

Re: 2018 summer support group

I often find that the fix for a slump is a solo round - seems to get the right rhythm and then there's the opportunity to hit multiple shots to figure things out. Hope it helps.

Re: Just Keep Swimming

When I was taking lessons my instructor kept telling me to look how short JB Holmes' swing was - don't get much longer distance wise then him.

Re: Just Keep Swimming

How tall are you? These are two big guys. I was told once to pattern my swing after a pro who has similar physical build. Does that apply here?

Re: 2018 PGA Tour Thread

There's a course near here that's only 40-50 years old. A few years back they really sped up the greens. It's on the side of a mountain. I like the layout but refuse to play there any more - impossible to stop the ball on several holes. Wasn't built for the speeds the course is using today.

Re: 2018 PGA Tour Thread

Not sure what the whole thing is about - there was a similar incident at the Olympic Club in 1998. I think it was a straight penalty no talk of DQ. Phil was clearly expressing his displeasure with the USGA but I don't know how that turns into DQ. Patrick Reed had some interesting comments - he said ...

Re: 2018 PGA Tour Thread

Played there many times as I have a kid at UVA. Unfortunately, they are supposed to tear it up and renovate it soon and it is supposed to be closed for a year. When I've looked the other courses in the area are usually quite pricey so I was hoping for an alternative.

Re: WTF did you shoot today?

5.5 hour round. Shot an 83 but my iron play was great. My tee ball got away from me on the back 9. Also the greens dried out and picked up quite a bit of speed quickly. They were pretty quick earlier but they were 1-2 feet faster by the end of the round. My round was ONLY 4.5 hours. The problem was...

Re: 2018 PGA Tour Thread

Assume Shinnecock was just another private course located in central NJ and never hosted a US Open. You have an opportunity to join. The dues are a bit high because they maintain a set of tees @ 7,500 yards and they tend to set the course up a bit on the difficult side with shaved green approaches,...

Re: 2018 PGA Tour Thread

Doug I'm going to get up that way one day and play there with you. I just need to figure out how to hit the ball straighter off the tee first haha. But if you ever want to meet half way (or halfish way like Williamsburg) let me know I'll take a day off work and meet you somewhere between. There is ...

Looks like Revenge of the USGA. Wish I could watch - say one hole. The wind is blowing and the course is hard.

Re: WTF did you shoot today?

Played TPC Southwind today 3 days after the Fedex St. Jude tournament. Wow what a tough course. I expected the greens to be fast and unplayable - they really weren't that bad - I heard they are kept at 12 - and they roll really really true. But the greens are very small and quite narrow in some case...

Re: Interacting with Your Playing Partners

My guess is that there are degrees on how to address this question. There's annoyance and there's conversation. I played with a guy the other day who would not stop talking - all round - every minute someone wasn't taking a shot. Lots of annoying topics. Thank goodness it wasn't on an airplane or so...

Re: Describe Your Best Shot of the Month

I make a lot of long putts for bogey - can't explain it. For a long time my best shot ever was a hole out from 45 yards. I literally picked a spot about 5 yards short and 5 feet right of the hole and said if I landed it there the ball should end up pretty close. I hit the spot exactly and the ball r...

Re: Southern Grasses

So I feel like I'm starting to get this stuff - JFish see if you agree: Chipping - yes use more bounce. You also have to get a little pop into the air for your chips. A low chip will skid and run out more than you intend. Putting - still working on the grain thing, but dry greens roll much faster an...

Re: Random golf thoughts

On a course with the standard tee positions 1, 2, 3 for front/middle/back depending on hole, why would you have a hole where 1 is left, 2 is middle, 3 is right? I can see from the fairway that the flag is on the left side, I can't tell if it's front, middle, or back. But it looks like middle so I hi...

Re: Bawlz

So I decided that I am really going to compare my preferred Bridgestones and Titleist AVX. But first I had a sleeve of Callaway Chromesoft to work through. I bought them when I unexpected ran out of balls and they were the only yellow balls available. So I went out to a play a few after work today, ...

Re: Short Putts

Agree that 4' is a long "gimmie". On my Saturday morning group it depends on what the guys give you - usually 4' is a no, 2' is a yes, 3' is a maybe. Of course that may change depending on whether the hole is over and difficultly of the putt and generosity rises when someone has a rough hole. But ge...

Re: Bawlz

I'm going to play both AVX and B330-RX over the next few weeks. I plan to have a real test in a few weeks where I play the same course on consecutive days. Not sure there is a clear favorite at this time, but we will see. Worst case I stick with B330-RX but it will be nice to have a Titleist Yellow ...

Re: WTF did you shoot today?

Sometimes you have to remember that the goal of golf, like a book I read last summer said, is to put the ball in the hole in as few strokes as possible. The goal is not to have a perfect Justin Rose swing, although that would be nice. Therapeutic case in point from yesterday. I came off the course a...

Re: Describe Your Best Shot of the Month

How about a sequence of shots - yesterday shanked a wedge from about 35 yards -hit the green but then rolled off. Chipped the next one in to save par - hate this game.

Re: Bawlz

One thing I will add is the AVX doesn't seem to scuff as much as Bridgestones or Callaways. I hit the cart path with the kind of hit that makes a huge mark on Bridgestones - one of my complaints is that they are so soft that scuff too easilty. AVX seems to have survived this better or at least gotte...

Re: Bawlz

Needed balls the other day so when I ordered (with all the golf retail closings I now usually use Amazon Prime for golf balls) I went for the AVX. Decided to use them today and for the most part I was pretty pleased. Certainly has good stopping action on the greens, but the course was also wet so th...
