Re: 2018 Spring Support Group

I don't know where you played today but I forgot to mention that one of the benefits of Neshanic (and Quail Brook) is that it is probably the best draining course ever. Even after hurricane rains roll through it's very rarely cart path only. Quail brook drains well too. Spooky Brook drains good but ...

Re: WTF did you shoot today?

Wild Turkey and Ballyowen are packed on the weekends even with the high rates. I think it is mostly people from in and around the city who don't have much access to golf and to them those rates aren't crazy and given the ride to get there they're willing to spend 5 hours on a round. I haven't played...

Re: Southern Grasses

Reading the grain is super easy, bermuda grows with the slope. So up hill is into the grain down hill is with the grain. This sucks when you are chipping/pitching on an uphill lie. But if you remember to use the bounce (or hybrid if possible) it's not that bad. I grew up with high bounce clubs and ...

Re: WTF did you shoot today?

Wow - that's down in my neighborhood - the Beef was nearby. Neshanic is the flagship course of Somerset County where I live. The other 4 courses are good for muni's, but Neshanic is special. My last two trips to the Ballyowen / Wild Turkey area were both 5.5 hour rounds. I vowed never again. If I wa...

Re: Reduced flight balls closer than we think?

Agree and disagree - the average tour pro was 6'2" several years ago - I'm sure that's up considerably since 1995. That's one reason that the standard putter length is now 34-35". But even the smaller guys are swinging harder / generating more club speed. Some of it is training, but some of it has t...

Re: Southern Grasses

I chipped at the range for a long time last night. I've adopted a chipping style that has the ball closer to the middle of my stance but it seems with Bermuda it's best to put it a little further back. It also seems to me, not sure, that balls landing on the fringe have a less predictable bounce and...

Southern Grasses

Okay so I'm going to be playing a lot of southern grasses this weekend and in the future. By that I mean Bermuda and all the other varieties. To be blunt, I've learned golf in the Northeast and I love bent grass. I'm a former southerner and I can't stand this Bermuda stuff for playing golf. So any h...

Re: Reduced flight balls closer than we think?

I find it interesting that they are so focused on the ball. I think it is because the Pro VI changed the game and there is almost a pre and post Pro VI in tour history. But in the 9 years that I've been playing I think it's more the equipment that has changed than the ball. At the pro level, you hav...

Re: 2018 Spring Support Group

Funny I read this and took my rain suit with me today - I never do - and actually wore it for the whole round and we got dumped on for one hole. I never fell comfortable, however, with the rain pants over my regular pants - doesn't feel right. I think if I play tomorrow I'm just wearing shorts under...

Re: golf is hard

So my game is really struggling. I did some shot by shot analysis and I'm about 2.2 shots worse in my six official rounds this year than I was during my last 20 official rounds last season. I'm down 2 strokes in putting alone and my chipping is off another stroke - my ball striking is actually bette...

Re: The Wind

I think it's a little bit of both. I think I notice it more because as a golfer I'm so much more aware. However, I do believe that it has been windier than usual in NJ for the last 12-15 months. I know last summer was windy - NJ summers are usually windless.

We don't stream TV, but since you guys brought it up - what's the recommendation between Apple TV and Roku? I understand you should do one as most Smart TVs aren't as smart as advertised.

Re: The Grumble Thread

So I'm out of town and wanted to play today at a local muni. I picked this muni, despite an average reputation, because it has lots of walkers and I was in the mood for a stroll. I tried to make a tee time on golf now, but it wouldn't allow a single so I called the course and they set me up to play ...

Re: WTF did you shoot today?

Nice Round BK. I haven't had time to report similar but different results. After struggling through several early season rounds with nothing good happening with my game I had my first round to post last Saturday. A very respectable 78 which was much better than it looks. My putting was very off and ...

Re: The role/function of hands in golf

How I feel it, which may be quite different from reality, is on a good full swing my hands are passive. They don't move as much as they seem to follow the club back and up. Of course at some point they hinge, but not intentionally, it's that the movement of the club requires them to hinge and then u...

Re: Bawlz

AVX stands for Alternate to V and X. It is marketed as the same level ball as the Pro V or ProV 1 X with some different characteristics, as I outlined above. Hence, the price is the same. Sorry. I bet you like them when you try them. I bet I like them too but not more than my existing balls which m...

BTW - I will probably try these things as I will invariably need a sleeve and they will probably be available in yellow and my Bridgestones won't. Like being able to see my yellow ball.

Re: Bawlz

Frankly, GBogey, you should try them before you poo poo them. My point was I don't think the marketing makes sense. Frankly, for whatever reason, I have never felt like Pro V1s fit my game. Trust me that I'm a ball snob - I don't pick up stray balls and only play what I want to play. I figure it's ...

So from what I read on another forum - basically a Chrome Soft or B 330 RX, but since it's a Titleist they are charging the same price as a Pro V. I think Titleist missed the mark on this one.

Totally a brushed / gray look player. It just seems to me that's what a wedge should look like. Actually my irons are also a little brushed. Not a fan of the silver look at all. But do have one wedge I bought at discount that is chrome.

Re: How far do you really hit the ball.

When I am driving the ball well, in warmer temps, with reasonable roll, my center contact drives average about 230-240. If my baby draw is working I can get out there 250. But, my carry is typically around 225. I can also hit some real stinkers and barely reach 200. Everything depends on the day an...

Kuchar has been a top 20 type player a long time. Probably lost his chance last year. Westwood has been an elite player for at least two long periods. Seems like a really nice guy but doesn't seem to have the "it" factor to have won a major. Rickie is an obvious choice. Matsuyama and Rahm haven't be...

I won't say he's my favorite player but I pull for Patrick Reed a lot. I like players with a lot of fight, i.e. Stacy Lewis, and I appreciate a good short game. He's definitely tough. I hope he works on his image a little - would be good for him. For some reason I don't like Rory at all. Off the cou...

I guess Callaway can make a new ad that talks about how much spin their wedges put on the ball.
