Re: How far do you really hit the ball.

When I am driving the ball well, in warmer temps, with reasonable roll, my center contact drives average about 230-240. If my baby draw is working I can get out there 250. But, my carry is typically around 225. I can also hit some real stinkers and barely reach 200. Everything depends on the day an...

Re: PGA POLL: It was once Phil, then Sergio, now...

Kuchar has been a top 20 type player a long time. Probably lost his chance last year. Westwood has been an elite player for at least two long periods. Seems like a really nice guy but doesn't seem to have the "it" factor to have won a major. Rickie is an obvious choice. Matsuyama and Rahm haven't be...

Re: 2018 The Masters Tournament

I won't say he's my favorite player but I pull for Patrick Reed a lot. I like players with a lot of fight, i.e. Stacy Lewis, and I appreciate a good short game. He's definitely tough. I hope he works on his image a little - would be good for him. For some reason I don't like Rory at all. Off the cou...

I guess Callaway can make a new ad that talks about how much spin their wedges put on the ball.

Re: Too many clubs. What would you do?

I'd take out the club you hit the worst. For example, I at times do better choking down on a hybrid than hitting a 5i, so that might be an option. I also don't carry a 3W as I hit a 5W just as far, at least off the deck. Not a big fan of adjusting clubs - never felt I was good enough.

Re: 2018 PGA Tour Thread

I'm always amazed by how the mind impacts golf, even when we don't think it does. I know that my play suffered when my old company was going through really tough times. Shouldn't matter when you are playing on a weekend, but it did. Today I had the alternate event on mute while I was working from ho...

Re: Describe Your Best Shot of the Month

Unbelievable but almost did again today. More legit par 5 - 477, no wind. Driver, 5W to 7 feet. Putt just slide over edge of hole. I seem to really be swinging in mid-season form. For starters, after years of practice I seem to finally be hitting my driver and 5W with relative consistency. Unfortuna...

Re: Describe Your Best Shot of the Month

So first time out this month but have my hole if not my shot. Qualifier, short par 5 (460 yards) and good wind behind me, but had my first par 5 eagle. Huge wind aided drive, must have been 280+, 6i to the green that almost hit the flag, sank a putt from 20 feet. Next hole was a short par 3 - 2 feet...

Re: Modernization of Rules - USGA/R&A

Lost balls are a totally different animal. The ball is lost so one has no idea where it is. I have seen people "estimate" the lost area 100 yards further than I would have looked for the ball. At least there is a 2 stroke penalty for adopting this fudged approach. It used to really grind my gears w...

Re: Modernization of Rules - USGA/R&A

Very True. Not only that but a buddy of mine and I used to joke about how "a shot that deep is into the grand stand", so we should get a free drop closer to the green.

Re: Modernization of Rules - USGA/R&A

My whole objection to these rules changes is that they will essentially make the game easier (in terms of scoring), and by too-significant a margin. Too much change, too suddenly. :nope I can see why you might say that but not sure I agree with one or two exceptions: Grounding a club in a hazard do...

Re: Modernization of Rules - USGA/R&A

Enough! Back to the rules. As I see it the changes can be summarized as follows: 1. If you ball moves by accident you can replace it without penalty - won't change how most people play 2. Rule changes about drops and reliefs from hazards - won't change how most people play that much 3. More areas ma...

Re: Modernization of Rules - USGA/R&A

So if you play a provisional you cannot use the local rule, but you still have the provisional option. So I understand it this way - you hit a big shot OB, you can drop on edge of fairway lieing (how to you spell lieing in golf?) 3. So no different than you hit a shot OB and then hit another shot to...

Re: Modernization of Rules - USGA/R&A

So the USGA decided to make OOB a play where instead of stroke and distance, you can drop near where the ball went OB, even in the fairway, with a two stroke penalty. It's listed as a local rule but I can't imagine a typical course not adopting it. Interestingly it still makes OB and lost ball more...

Re: Credit Cards

I'm probably different from most here. First, I use credit cards for almost everything. I've come to dislike cash, especially change, and so I use it as little as possible. This can lead to some really large statements when you pay for everything with cc, and I have two college kids who have my cc t...

Re: WTF did you shoot today?

+5 when adjusting for putting on the back 9 at Whistling Straits today. Got desperate so gave virtual golf a try. Spent about 30 minutes on "the range" and 30 minutes playing. The chipping and putting are really goofy but other than that a not bad experience. I wouldn't choose it over playing but it...

Re: 2018 Winter Season Support Group

It's like a big tease. Some nice weather in late February followed by the late snows. Beef is right - I think that this is 3 years in a row without significant January snow only to be blasted late Feb/March. Really displeasing, especially since I've really struck the ball well the last two range ses...

Re: WTF did you buy today?

I think when I was thinking about buying a set last year Titleist and Mizuno were the only ones where a 5i was a 4.5i - everyone else the 5i was a 4i compared to my Pings, and my Pings were only 3 years old. I figure if I wait 5 more years on new irons, my irons will start with a 7i and I'll have 5 ...

Re: WTF did you buy today?

Man I have to say that club is super hot. I'm not sure how it compares to my 7i (descent angle and spin rate and dispersion are all I care about in irons). But this thing was really hard to misshit. After hitting 3 or 4 that I thought were "too simple" I purposely hit one off the toe and heel. Not ...

I thought this was pretty good - came from newsletter the pro I took lessons from sent out GOLF TIP HYBRIDS OR LONG IRONS? Re: What's in your bag?

Interesting podcast last week from Golf Digest. They discussed this year’s Hot List. The question was do clubs really improve every year. They said think about car models - new ones come out every year and one would mostly say each new model is better than the previous year. However, that doesn’t me...

Re: Describe Your Best Shot of the Month

Congrats - I know both of those feelings. This summer I holed one from 100 yards or so, but because I hit a bad tee shot it was for birdie instead of eagle. On the other hand, if someone asks me about my best shot ever, I SHOULD instantly think about my lone eagle which was a 160 yard hole out from ...

Re: Random golf thoughts

Finally figured out when a GPS comes in handy. This morning was a bit foggy. I could see about 100 yards of ball flight and flags were harder to see from more than 175 yards out. Two blondes teed off on a Par 3 on a really foggy day such that they couldn't see the flag or where their balls finished...
