Re: February Golf

The weatherman had a big miss last 36 hours. Was supposed to be a light rain last night then 56 with light/no wind today. Instead last night's rain was heavy and today never reached 50 with a strong wind. Course was an absolute mud pit. After waddling through the mud for 4 holes, I saw that on two h...

Re: 2019 PGA Tour thread

Never seen a final round leader 3 putt from 3 feet (Holmes) or 4 putt (Thomas). Conditions seem brutal.

Re: What Do You Carry in Your Pockets During a Round?

It would be an interesting experiment to have a stranger re-arrange what and where we carry stuff while playing golf. Make me, Fish and Beef carry an extra ball in our right pocket. Attach gpickin's phone to his bag. Take away SJ's hankie. Take the spare balls away from MattF and GBogey. Place all ...

Re: What Do You Carry in Your Pockets During a Round?

We are such creatures of habit it's amazing. Right front pocket - start with 3 tees, 1 long one for driver and 2 non-long for non-driver. The driver tees last many many rounds. Lucky to have the two non-driver last a whole round - I just can't remember to retrieve those. Also in right front pocket i...

Re: 2019 goals

1. Maintain handicap under 7 - usually goes up to 7.5 at some point during season 2. Achieve average differential of 8.0 - basically a stroke better than last 3 years 3. Play at least one bucket list course - have several potential trips in discussion that could make this happen 4. Secondary goal is...

Re: February Golf

I drove by the course this morning and saw several more guys playing than I expected as it was quite cold. I went myself at 1 pm, barely 40 degrees but sun was shining. Wasn't going to play but then I thought, there you people in the frozen mitten dying for day like this. As it was it was one of my ...

Re: February Golf

Less than a week ago we had 8 inches of snow and then "real feel" temperatures of -40 degrees (f). Today I wandered around our city's executive course. Only the flat seven are open so I went around almost three times for 19 holes. It was surprisingly nice. Hmmm - three times seven equals 21, not 19...

Re: Course Staff and Rangers

Why is the vast majority of golf course staff so awful anyways? That's probably a little of an overstatement - I've met so many who were really nice. But the grumpy ones always surprise me. Let's face it - these are usually retirees who work/volunteer at the golf course because they love golf (and ...

Course Staff and Rangers

i decided this deserves its own thread because of the stories that they create. So the course I went to today has 9 holes closed as they put in a new sprinkler system. So the guy behind the counter says only 9 holes are open and sells me a 9 hole fee. I asked what should I do if I want a 2nd 9 and h...

Re: February Golf

The bumpy greens are a conundrum. Usually you associate fast greens with smooth greens. I sometimes think it is easier to make 5 footers on fast greens than slow greens as all you have to do is tap it. But fast bumpy greens - those are quite difficult. That is why it is still February golf instead o...

Re: February Golf

I can't tell you how beautiful it was here today. Only thing no golf perfect was a strong gusting swirling wind. Played the same 9 twice - on a par 3 the first go around I clubbed up 1.5 clubs and hit the ball to the back fringe. 2nd time around I clubbed up 1 club and barely hit the front fringe. I...

Re: February Golf

It is interesting that they don't oversees the greens. I am fairly certain I have not putted on dormant Bermuda. Right now I would love to putt, period. Even the two really high end courses here don't seem to do that. My guess is that play is so low in December/January that the cost doesn't help th...

February Golf

So one thing I've noticed lately is that all the greens around here seem to be rolling fast. Thought it was my imagination, but I spoke with a pro at a club the other day and he told me that Bermuda grass is at its fastest when its dormant. Quite the opposite of the NE where they let it grow and it ...

Re: When is it TOO Cold?

Have I told you I love being in the South again? Today I wore my winter coat for the 3rd time this year. On the way home one of those highway information signs was flashing “Cold winter conditions exist. Use caution.” I looked at the temperature gauge and it said 36. Wimps.

Re: The New 2019 Rules

My round on Sunday was very confusing. Should it be in or out - the guys I was with would usually ask and nice the greens were very fast and I always seemed to be above the hole I always said leave it in. But I refuse to have someone put it back in, even when I want it to be in. Maybe in the Spring ...

Re: January Golf!

Mrs. Bogey enjoys walking the course. She could be good if she would work at it but she doesn't care enough. Her short game has been lacking which drives me crazy, but she did try harder on that this year. Post move bought her some nicer clubs and she now enjoys it more, but she doesn't play unless ...

Re: WTF did you buy today?

I have a friend who swore by a club champion fitting. I think it cost $2000 for a full bag. I would think most fittings by the equipment companies would be a nice cost / quality trade off with the caveat that won’t fit you into someone else’s stuff. Although I am not the Titleist enthusiast Doug is,...

Re: WTF did you buy today?

Got a pair of Footjoy SL, a pair of Footjoy DNA Helix, and a new Footjoy Wind Vest for Christmas. Very pleased with what I picked out for myself and had Santa deliver. Unfortunately, I have doubles of the items and have to figure out which set is easiest to return. Unknown by me, even when you fill...

Triple bonus today. First bonus - the forecast changed two days ago - 50 instead of high 30's. 2nd bonus - my wife meets a lady two days ago. Tells her we are new to town and her husband is a golf nut. The other woman tells her that her husband is a golf nut and is going to invite me to play the bes...

Re: January Golf!

I think we all are going to need to go to Hellabama to play for the next several weeks. Really glad I braved the mud on Friday - next 2-3 weeks looks totally unplayable even in the Mid South. On the afternoon agenda - clean clubs and consider replacing grips.

Re: WTF did you buy today?

I agree with Doug. There are lots of players out there who would benefit from dropping a 3W and going to a 5W or 2H. Given the distances /swing speed discussed here, it may not apply to Gavin if he is hitting it well. But FWIW, I just couldn't hit a 3W off the deck. Went to a 5W (actually adjusted t...

Was able to sneak in what is probably one last January round today. Will be 60 tomorrow but big rains expected. After that the forecast for the next two weeks is quite cold. I was just getting used to this southern living thing. Total mud fest again today but I think I'm learning how to strike it be...

Re: WTF did you buy today?

So much depends on what feels good to you. I play Golf Pride MCC grips in Midsize. They may feel nice if you like a bit wider diameter. I actually have been playing these for years, but the new MCC +4 grips are starting to appeal to me. The lower hand portion is like having 4 extra wraps. Overall i...

Re: The New 2019 Rules

I think this data is consistent with the other two major studies I've seen. The issue or key is speed - at the right speed, the pin isn't going to make a huge difference. At the wrong speed, it makes a huge difference. When are you more likely to have the right speed - shorter putts. When are you mo...

Re: The New 2019 Rules

I agree with the above. I think it will help more than it will hurt to have the flag in (in all situations). That being said I also think the frequency of someone hitting the flag stick on a putt that otherwise would not have gone in and the flag stick either 1) making it go in or 2) making it a cl...
