Bethpage

So watching the tournament this weekend I got the itch to play Bethpage - putting down as an objective for next summer. But my question is, although clearly Bethpage is a difficult course, how difficult would it be if they shortened the rough? I ask this as I recently played a course that hosted the...

Re: WTF did you shoot today?

Nice rounds Doug! I also had a stellar weekend. 2 weeks after sinking to a low place, I followed up last Sunday's breakout round with a 76, 78, 75 weekend, easily the best 4 consecutive rounds that I have played. Driving, relative to me, has been stellar. Putting over the top good - making all kinds...

Re: WTF did you shoot today?

New personal record for me yesterday. Shot 82 with 3 birdies (and the neary at 1.03 meters from the pin), one double and the rest all pars and bogies. That's net 8 under  (with a 15 handicap we I get 18 strokes on my homecourse). I guess the heat is good to my game (a 5.5 hour round OTOH...)...

Re: Book recommendations?

When I do read for pleasure, I'm pretty much a mystery man so I'm probably not much help. However, I recently read a book called "The Blackhouse," which was a great mystery but also great because it takes place on the Isle of Lewis (off the northwest coast of Scotland) and describes life there in gr...

Re: WTF did you shoot today?

Broke out of my recent funk with a 74 yesterday, which is a heck of a pay to stop a funk. Was having to do a lot of grinding the first 12 holes so I didn't realize how well I was scoring until the end. The secret elixir, IMO, was a deliberate round that I played solo last week. At this point, I find...

Re: Sick of sucky scores

Breaking 90 is about eliminating penalties and being able to advance the ball towards the green. You can break 90 pretty easily with a terrible short game. My guess if you are having trouble breaking 90 you have 4-5 penalties a round. One of which is stroke and distance? What would your average sco...

Re: Terry Koehler out as President/CEO at Ben Hogan Golf

Funny, but I was thinking about him today. He had this thing where he kept saying everyone should choke down on their driver for control. Lately I've been choking down for different reasons - something about choking down helps me get my grip aligned - but it's been working. Anyway, today as I'm chok...

Re: WTF did you shoot today?

So I apologize for the long rant but I'm struggling and need a therapy session. The previous 3 weekends I've played 7 times and been pleased with my play once. Mind you, scores have not been terrible - as my swing has deteriorated my short game has been great, turning bad scores into mediocre. Then ...

Re: Sick of sucky scores

I was probably a 17 when I broke 90 the first time. I was pretty consistently breaking 90 at least half the time after that. Went to around a 13 pretty quickly, say a few months. But a warning, at that time I was playing or practicing about 3 times a week. I kept improving until I became a 10-11 and...

Re: With which company do you think Tiger will go?

I was waiting for someone to fold, but thought it was likely to be Adams or Cobra instead of Nike. The question is does this turn into a big win fall for Rory and Tiger. They are getting paid to wear and use Nike. Do they now get to get paid to use someone else's equipment while Nike still has to co...

Re: Random golf thoughts

Bob Vokey suggests every 70 rounds or so, assuming practice in between rounds too. Frankly, that is a bit too costly for me, so I try to change them every season and a half. I used to use a groove sharpener to extend the life of the old square-groove style wedges. I could easily get 2 full seasons ...

Re: Random golf thoughts

Just curious, how often do you buy new wedges? Mine shouldn't be that old but feel like they have already lost some spin. Of course, it could be that the golf ball upgrade is trading distance for spin.

Hit one of my better hybrids ever today. From 215 into a 5-10 yard wind, hit a perfect ball to pin high, 25 feet from the hole. Eagle putt gave the hole a look but settled for a tap-in birdie. Those are rare enough as is.

Re: Breaking News: 2016 PGA Championship to be held THIS WEEK

Went today for a few hours. I can only say that the greens had these guys really puzzled. Fast as anything - a tap went forever - but look after look of surprise. And even short irons rolled past the hole like shots you and I would hit. I don't see a birdie fest this week unless the rain changes the...

Re: International Crown Preview, Matches, and More

Time for a fun math question. At the conclusion of any ladies fourball golf match, all four players and their caddies must hug it out. What's the total number of hugs that are exchanged every time a match ends? If every player hugs every other player and every caddie, it's 22 hugs. If the caddies w...

Re: Tournaments - How the Heck Did You Do?

Take-a-ways: Shit some of these kids can hit it a long ways. The longest drive markers were miles ahead of my decent efforts. The game is a lot easier hitting driver and wedge. I think there are 2-3 holes where I hit driver/wedge. Lots of driver/3 wood. You are right - they can hit it a long ways, ...

Wow - right before Acushnet goes public. Don't buy that stock at the IPO - they are losing customer loyalty.

Re: Sick of sucky scores

First, one of the luckiest things that ever happened to me was when I was around a 17-18 handicap. I went through a 4 week period where I was way too swamped with work and I only had time for the range visits. At the same time, I read something that clued me into the fact that my short game wasn't a...

Re: U.S. Women's Open Preview, Pairings, and Much More.

In this case, I don't agree about intent. This rule is clear and she broke it. The real question is the high def cameras - they don't follow every shot - is that fair? If you can't see movement with the naked eye, is that a penalty? That's something that needs to be re-thought.

Agree, I am not a total traditionalist by any means but sloppy dress doesn't go with golf. And occasionally your shirt should be tucked in.

Ticks me off when someone is trying to get a read on their putt, which is just inside your ball, and they stand directly behind you, maybe squatting down even. I had to stop and explain to a guy recently that I would appreciate him not doing that as it is distracting. I commented that he should wat...

I'm using skygolf and shot by shot - I've looked but just haven't found anything that matches skygolf for what I want so it's worth the $20 annual fee.

Oh, and I use a spreadsheet to track a few other stats that I can't get from the other two. A little obsessed some might say.

I was struggling to describe it but it was chicken wire that extended 6-8 inches from the tree. My ball was just a few inches behind the wire but not the tree. It is hard to describe, but if the wire hadn't been there I could have advanced the ball toward the green without real fear of hitting the t...

In relation to interfering with the swing, does that include a reasonable follow through?
