Re: Random golf thoughts

On a course with the standard tee positions 1, 2, 3 for front/middle/back depending on hole, why would you have a hole where 1 is left, 2 is middle, 3 is right? I can see from the fairway that the flag is on the left side, I can't tell if it's front, middle, or back. But it looks like middle so I hi...

Re: Bawlz

So I decided that I am really going to compare my preferred Bridgestones and Titleist AVX. But first I had a sleeve of Callaway Chromesoft to work through. I bought them when I unexpected ran out of balls and they were the only yellow balls available. So I went out to a play a few after work today, ...

Re: Short Putts

Agree that 4' is a long "gimmie". On my Saturday morning group it depends on what the guys give you - usually 4' is a no, 2' is a yes, 3' is a maybe. Of course that may change depending on whether the hole is over and difficultly of the putt and generosity rises when someone has a rough hole. But ge...

Re: Bawlz

I'm going to play both AVX and B330-RX over the next few weeks. I plan to have a real test in a few weeks where I play the same course on consecutive days. Not sure there is a clear favorite at this time, but we will see. Worst case I stick with B330-RX but it will be nice to have a Titleist Yellow ...

Re: WTF did you shoot today?

Sometimes you have to remember that the goal of golf, like a book I read last summer said, is to put the ball in the hole in as few strokes as possible. The goal is not to have a perfect Justin Rose swing, although that would be nice. Therapeutic case in point from yesterday. I came off the course a...

Re: Describe Your Best Shot of the Month

How about a sequence of shots - yesterday shanked a wedge from about 35 yards -hit the green but then rolled off. Chipped the next one in to save par - hate this game.

Re: Bawlz

One thing I will add is the AVX doesn't seem to scuff as much as Bridgestones or Callaways. I hit the cart path with the kind of hit that makes a huge mark on Bridgestones - one of my complaints is that they are so soft that scuff too easilty. AVX seems to have survived this better or at least gotte...

Re: Bawlz

Needed balls the other day so when I ordered (with all the golf retail closings I now usually use Amazon Prime for golf balls) I went for the AVX. Decided to use them today and for the most part I was pretty pleased. Certainly has good stopping action on the greens, but the course was also wet so th...

Re: WTF did you shoot today?

Weird day today - probably my last round at my #2 course before the move. Was hoping for a good score, let's say 78 or better, so that I can pretty much focus on my home course good byes for the rest of the month. Was about as good as I can be the first 12 holes - even par with a couple of good bird...

Re: WTF did you shoot today?

I scored my best round ever today: 71 on a par 70 course that is fairly straightforward but with some tricky greens. I played from the back tees (6200 yards) as usual here, with 3 birdies and 4 bogeys: I only hit 7 greens in regulation but made 7 of 11 up and downs, and needed only 26 putts (10 1-p...

Re: WTF did you shoot today?

It's a problem that I see in my future home. Even though the public courses there are clearly struggling and tee sheets are wide open, many won't accept tee times for singles. Makes no sense. It's also an area where many more people ride than walk which given the favorable weather is another puzzler...

Re: 2018 Spring Support Group

I don't know where you played today but I forgot to mention that one of the benefits of Neshanic (and Quail Brook) is that it is probably the best draining course ever. Even after hurricane rains roll through it's very rarely cart path only. Quail brook drains well too. Spooky Brook drains good but ...

Re: WTF did you shoot today?

Wild Turkey and Ballyowen are packed on the weekends even with the high rates. I think it is mostly people from in and around the city who don't have much access to golf and to them those rates aren't crazy and given the ride to get there they're willing to spend 5 hours on a round. I haven't played...

Re: Southern Grasses

Reading the grain is super easy, bermuda grows with the slope. So up hill is into the grain down hill is with the grain. This sucks when you are chipping/pitching on an uphill lie. But if you remember to use the bounce (or hybrid if possible) it's not that bad. I grew up with high bounce clubs and ...

Re: WTF did you shoot today?

Wow - that's down in my neighborhood - the Beef was nearby. Neshanic is the flagship course of Somerset County where I live. The other 4 courses are good for muni's, but Neshanic is special. My last two trips to the Ballyowen / Wild Turkey area were both 5.5 hour rounds. I vowed never again. If I wa...

Re: Reduced flight balls closer than we think?

Agree and disagree - the average tour pro was 6'2" several years ago - I'm sure that's up considerably since 1995. That's one reason that the standard putter length is now 34-35". But even the smaller guys are swinging harder / generating more club speed. Some of it is training, but some of it has t...

Re: Southern Grasses

I chipped at the range for a long time last night. I've adopted a chipping style that has the ball closer to the middle of my stance but it seems with Bermuda it's best to put it a little further back. It also seems to me, not sure, that balls landing on the fringe have a less predictable bounce and...

Southern Grasses

Okay so I'm going to be playing a lot of southern grasses this weekend and in the future. By that I mean Bermuda and all the other varieties. To be blunt, I've learned golf in the Northeast and I love bent grass. I'm a former southerner and I can't stand this Bermuda stuff for playing golf. So any h...

Re: Reduced flight balls closer than we think?

I find it interesting that they are so focused on the ball. I think it is because the Pro VI changed the game and there is almost a pre and post Pro VI in tour history. But in the 9 years that I've been playing I think it's more the equipment that has changed than the ball. At the pro level, you hav...

Re: 2018 Spring Support Group

Funny I read this and took my rain suit with me today - I never do - and actually wore it for the whole round and we got dumped on for one hole. I never fell comfortable, however, with the rain pants over my regular pants - doesn't feel right. I think if I play tomorrow I'm just wearing shorts under...

So my game is really struggling. I did some shot by shot analysis and I'm about 2.2 shots worse in my six official rounds this year than I was during my last 20 official rounds last season. I'm down 2 strokes in putting alone and my chipping is off another stroke - my ball striking is actually bette...

Re: The Wind

I think it's a little bit of both. I think I notice it more because as a golfer I'm so much more aware. However, I do believe that it has been windier than usual in NJ for the last 12-15 months. I know last summer was windy - NJ summers are usually windless.

We don't stream TV, but since you guys brought it up - what's the recommendation between Apple TV and Roku? I understand you should do one as most Smart TVs aren't as smart as advertised.
