Spring 2019 Golf

Post by bkuehn1952 » Sun Mar 03, 2019 8:05 pm

It is going to be a while for the Perpetually Frozen Mitten. The extended forecast, however, does have a day with a temperature over 40 degrees (f).

It is always wet in the U.K. The only variation is whether it is cold or just cool. :school

2" now sufficient to close down schools for the day. If I had a kid in school, I'd be so pissed right now.

I don't know if this is true or not, but it seems to me the new normal the last 5 years or so is a relatively mild December-January and a more fierce February-March. Why IDK. Is it true? IDK. But it feels that way. Probably have to blame global warming although that sounds counter intuitive.

March will be our depths of despair it seems. Arctic temps, lingering snow cover, frozen/refrozen slush. If we do get out to the course this month, it will be a historically mucky mess. Already pining for 2019-20 winter golf. fts

The extended forecast is starting to look okay. Every day above freezing and even a period with no temps under 32. The snow and ice will be gone shortly. Now the drying out process starts. The SE corner of the Mitten is fairly swampy and we have clay soil in many places. Not a good combination in the Spring. Still, we are making baby step advances.

We had at least another inch of rain last night. So today, for the 2nd time in 5 days, I am passing on playing golf when I could have. That has never happened unless the wife was mad at me for playing too much. It will be dry for 72 hours so there will be golf this weekend.

What the hell is going here. It is spring, which is supposed to be the grand opening of douchebag golf season. The Masters, that bellwether of spring golf in the Americas, has already come and gone, AND it was the most inspirational Masters in a long ass time and yet it feels like nobody here is playing much golf, and/or even giving much of a shit.

I am as if not more in the dumps than anyone. Me and Fish maybe. I still care about golf as a concept, it should be known. Unfortunately I still think about the stupid shit pretty often. But it's so hard for me to get out there now. I cannot really overstate the difficulty.

I used to have to fight the temptation to go play golf. Not anymore. No more temptation. It's the opposite now--I feel I must force myself to play golf every so often so that I don't lose my connection with it altogether. I now fight the temptation to NOT play golf in other words. I love playing and everything, but I cannot escape the idea that at over age 40 life is getting too short to spend extendo periods of time in the company of dim, boring, ordinary folk whom you cannot stand. No I don't wanna hear no friggin golf joke, old man. Get out of my face. Life is getting too short to fake politeness, to fake small talk, to fake interest in other people's business when in fact you have none. It does not help matters obviously that the golf course tends to be like 99.5% male. Sorry but I'm just not a sausage party guy. I'm no dorothy either but I do prefer mixed company, it feels more normal. I have no desire ever to join a men's social club but that is effectively what a golf course in New York City is. :facepalm

That said, it is spring now. Let's get out there and enjoy golf and make some birdies people :ohyeah

I don't know about everyone else, but I am playing a lot of golf. I just don't talk about it unless there is something interesting to say. Who gives a shit about my game otherwise? Nobody.

That's right. You had that big sandy eagle the other day. See, people care.

Anyways, I will make an effort to go play. Soon. Maybe. Probably.

On 5/9 I'm playing a 4 person scramble with work. The team I was on last year won (shortened to 9 holes due to rain) with a score of -7.

I don't see me playing golf before then, and depending on how that goes I may get the bug to play. Right now I just can't find 5-6 hours of continuous daylight on the weekends of things that golf would take priority over.
Keep it short stupid.

I give Kuehn some of the credit/blame for my outlook on spring golf. Spring golf really does come with a great host of drawbacks.

Then again, I think we might be in the midst of a substantial climate reconfiguration, and that it is having a real effect on people's golf (and sports in general) habits. I can attest that the winter sports landscape already looks really different than say 10-15 years ago. I'm talking mostly about turf conditions. I was playing fairly frequently at the end of winter, and the conditions were worse than I ever seen. Not worse as in cataclysmic or anything. But definitely worse for golf. Muddier than ever. Seems like tundra conditions are actually better for the health of the turf over the winter. I expect it's quite bad out there right now after adding a few big spring rains to what was already a saturated bog.

It's 78 degrees outside. I miss winter. This is not just about golf. I like it better when it's cool. I like to cover up, and rather see everyone else covered up too. Don't like seeing people en masse feeling all saucy and frolicky in shorts and t-shirts. People's demeanor is also more subdued when it's cold and that's much better for me. Don't really care about seeing smiles on faces or laughter from children, not from any of these shitheads at least.

I've never been to NYC, but this is the sense I get from it. Let me know how right/wrong it is.

On a political spectrum most people in NYC lean more to the left and are fond of "social welfare" type programs. Because you know we want to help out those that are less fortunate.

Then when it comes to walking down the subway they just ignore the homeless guy asking for change. Don't help the strays.

Seems like a really confusing city to me.

Dude I can see you are in a mood. Well don't go barking up this tree, because I am like, King Mood. IMO.

All big cities lean left, even in the freakin south. What the F do I know about it. And don't give people crap for not feeding panhandlers, only dummies do that here.
