4th round using it & my putter tag broke. Went from hole #12,tagged with my putter as usual - when I went to tag on #13 there was no beep or buzz. I thought the battery died or something. There was still the screwed in part and a flat bit on the putter... the other part was at the bottom of the bag. Whatever was inside I guess I lost. Now it's just an empty piece of plastic broke in 2 pieces.

Hopefully they all don't do this.

Thats crazy. Did you email support. I've never had anything break yet, but I heard they are great about replacing things quickly.

So Golfpad did some recent updates to their app, notably the addition of 'Strokes Gained' to the stats and round review.

I know JFish had posted his own results (compared to scratch, 20hcp, etc).

Hadn't really looked closely at how Broadie's 'Strokes Gained' stat is actually computed, but this explainer made it quite interesting, actually.

http://www.strokesgainedgolf.com/How-Strokes-Gained-Works.html

Anyhow, Golfpad's implementation is pretty unique, shows you with color coded shots how good/bad each shot was (which is essentially the core of Strokes Gained).

Here are some pics from the app of the display and my particular areas of suckage:

That's pretty nice.

Game golf's strokes gained leaves something to be desired. But they claim to be working on getting more. So far they have been honest with what they told me.

Cool feature. I just opened mine up and here's what it said over the last 12 months.

Tee shots -0.41
Approach -0.05
Short game -0.49
Putting -0.18
Total -1.36

Now, what does that mean in little words?

So, it means that compared to a scratch golfer, you lose 1.36 shots 'per hole', broken down by those 4 categories.

Multiplied by 18 holes, you lose 24.5 shots, so if a scratch golfer shoots 72 on a par 72, you likely shoot about 96.5. Of the 24.5 shots you're losing to the scratch player, you're losing about 7 shots off the tee, 1 shot from approaches, 9 shots from short game and 3 putts (more or less, as those were rounded).

Since 1.36 is the greater than the sum of the individual parts, I'm not sure where the other -0.23 shots per hole are lost (possibly penalties or something?). I'm curious about that myself, so I'm gonna ask them.

Sure. And in case you cared.... this was from support regarding the 4 category scores not adding up to the total:

"Categories don't always add up to total due to some shots not falling into either category. This includes second shots on par 5s and recovery shots."

If there were enough of us on this site that used it we could set up our own challenge. But I dont really do the other ones that they set up.

I'm not really sure how they work but if there's something we could set up... Maybe it'd be fun? Something to do?

I'll set a couple up for June, or would memorial day through labor day be better? I've got a ton going on in June and would be lucky to play twice.

Also which contests would you want to do?

Ok it didn't let me do it for the entire summer, so I did it labor day weekend through the end of June. Although I might just get 1 round in during that time.

Who all has game golf? I need to send an invite.

I set up 3 of them.
Net Score
GIR
Driving Distance

If I GameGolf a best ball tournament round... is there a way to keep it but not have it count toward "anything"? Do I just leave it un-signed until I delete it?

Best ball? As in you play you and your partner play your own ball and the lowest score after a hole is your team score?

Or best ball as in scramble?

If the former I think you could do it if you always played your ball out then keep the stats. If the later, I've just never brought the game golf with me in scrambles.

I'm an idiot. Not a best ball - a normal scramble. I plan on tagging where we hit as a team to "see" our round afterwards. I don't want anything to count as "me". Last year we won with a 54, -18. Not a bad score, lol.

Just dont sign the round. It wont count towards your stats until it is signed.

WTF is going on it this picture?
First it looks like all of the houses are built on top of each other, man that sucks.

Second hole looks like one that would piss me off.
1) the tee shot landing area is between the right and left bunker. It looks like putting a ball there would leave you a 200 yard cary to the 2nd fairway or layup sort of the end of the 1st fairway and have 200+ into the green.
2) If I were playing this hole in a tournament I'm pulling driver and going for the other holes fairway, basically the same line taken with your 3h off the tee, but with driver. It looks like a much shorter route to the green and will be your only chance of getting there in 2. Even if you can't get there in 2 it lines up perfectly for a layup into the 2nd fairway.

Yeah, that hole kind of has a lot going on. It's Tukwet Canyon (Champions course) hole 11. Doesn't look like there is, but there's junk separating the 2 holes (trees/bushes) which doesn't make your strategy that obvious when standing on the 11th tee. There might also be elevation factors, but I can't remember. The houses are crammed. It's typical new tract housing out in the sticks (desert-y area). It's a pretty nice course, and pretty cheap, just a long drive to get to. That's kind of the norm in Southern California (and probably everywhere else). Courses closer to the metro areas are quicker to drive to, but more expensive, more crowded, older, and not as interesting. Courses out in the boonies are a much better value, but you gotta add the commute time factor.
