The Style Thread

Postby legitimategolf » Mon May 18, 2015 11:15 pm

This thread is now about discussing the on-course fashions of the moment.

Image

For instance, I have been sporting the white solar sleeve every time I've worn a short sleeve shirt. So my arms have not really seen the sun much this year. No farmer's tan but only my wrists and hands have a tan and it's weird look. I have to do something about it.

I think I have gotten accustomed to the feeling of the compression-wear sleeves and besides the sun protection I think it makes people look at me suspicious, like, what is this guy up to. Where did he come from and who does he think he is, wearing long sleeves in the summer. (He probably thinks he better than us!)

On top of that I've been wearing a bucket hat, mainly because it's better sun protection than a cap. On top of that, I am not above popping a polo shirt collar--again, strictly for the protection. I know that all together this probably adds up to an overall look that flirts with douchebaggery. In the eyes of most regular people, I am guessing.

I don't care. It's all in the name of sun protection. If it makes someone give me the side-eye, then that's just a bonus. I should also mention on top of all that I am wearing mid calf length sport socks with my shorts. Fuck you man, Roger Federer and all the top tennis players do the same thing. When they do it, it's cool and when I do it, it is also cool.

After my last outing I ran all this by the missus, who works in the ultra high fashion industry, what she thought of my setup, etc. While I didn't exactly earn any high praise, she said it was fine, passed muster. Good enough for me. From all these years in living in gay New York, one thing I have learned about fashion is that you must own your look. It's not so much about the clothes themselves as it is owning it. Also I don't wear loud colors, which is probably what keeps me from going over the cliff. That and an absence of wraparound shades, which I might add at some point. Again, more sun protection!

You lost me @ popped collar.

But if you're not gonna use DoH's hat - can I use it for my next poker tourney?

I am not qualified to respond. I typically sport the "midwestern old pan-handler" look myself.

In all seriousness, I respect the sun protection stuff. I need to remember to apply my sunscreen on my neck and arms all the time. Phil's getting a little leathery and man, Patrick Reed's fish belly white forehead is appalling. I gotta say I wish I got out to play enough golf for it to be a problem for me.

I don't know, looking pretty smartly dressed in that avatar pic. In any case, like I said it doesn't really matter the style as long as one owns it, girlfriend.

I invariably forget to apply sunscreen early on in the season and get a nice red neck (front and back) that lasts throughout the season. I'm working on a good sock tan at the moment.

Here are a couple recent outfits (not sure why I have crazy eyes):

And yes, I'll wear orange

Look at your phone, like the second pic, and you'll avoid crazy eyes.

So, Ricky orange huh? I can't pull that off, I'd just look like an old fat white guy wearing orange.

Extra points for wearing orange! LOL

Orange is the Dutch national color, so I wear it once a year too

Thanks..I'll try that next time.

Yeah, I don't mind being that guy in orange. It's a great shirt by Antigua. I have a couple in black too.

This is me. I usually lose the jacket to play golf, though.

In lieu of "sun sleeves" I have started to use black knee socks to combat the effects of golfer's vasculitis. As a side benefit, most of the people with whom I play golf, tend to leave me alone.

I'm not too sure of what Mr K looks like, but based on the golf bag, I am assuming it is not him. Unless this is some sort of "hacky weekend golfer" Halloween costume.

That is most certainly me. I was getting some balls and the "15th Club" (aka ball retriever) just prior to playing 18 on Father's Day. I don't know what I shot today but I found 17 Top Flites!!!

That is not my golf bag, however. Old one for extra "stuff".

Ok BK let's get serious here now. What is up with the black stockings. What are they and do they really help relieve the vasculitis? I might have misdiagnosed myself earlier; I think what happened might've been simply exposure to some kind of irritating grass or weeds. Anyways I am still interested in those stockings. I'm not sure what my deal is, but at this point I am totally open to wearing anything (within reason) that other people might find odd or stupid or distracting. I am serious about the bucket hat, popped collar, white sleeves, long socks--this is my typical course style these days. I've gone off the deep end of misanthropy I think. And if I were to add black stockings I think I would definitely come off as somebody that most people want nothing to do with.

Compression socks? I got myself a pair to put on during those long transatlantic flights (from the West Coast, it's 10-11 hours non-stop). They do help prevent the dreaded blot clot that travels to your lungs and can kill you. Doing foot/leg exercises is not enough and airline seats are tighter than ever...
I'm gonna go low this time...
