2016-17 Winter Support Group

Postby bkuehn1952 » Thu Oct 27, 2016 11:49 am

We had our first snow in the lower portion of the Frosty Mitten yesterday. Fortunately it did not get south enough to create a problem down near "the wrist." Still, it signals the start of "course closing for the season" season.

I "lost" my sock hat last weekend. We were sitting by Lake Michigan, drinking a few Modelo's. I loaned the hat to our daughter-in-law to act as the brown bag often employed by we drinking in public types. Never got it back. It was my fav. Fleece-like minimalist blue sock. Dang, what the heck is she going to do with it in San Antonio?? Sigh. So I will need to see what is available quickly.

I'm not ready for this support group yet, but expect to put my 2 cents in regularly, just the same.

Certainly expect at least 15 or 20 more rounds before the end of the year and/or the cold weather shuts me down. Supposed to be well into the 70s here this weekend and through next week. We still have until Nov 14th to post official scores. So, I don't even want to think about winter yet, even though I know it is right around the corner.

If this year is normal, 3 have three weekends left in NJ, hoping for more, but like Doug I haven't given up yet. As fate would have it, to date I haven't even had to pull out the turtlenecks yet, although I think I may tomorrow.

In NYC it is possible to play at least once during every month on the calendar. Not every year, maybe one out of three or four. But that's always the hope going into every offseason. Even 11 out of 12 months is great. As of now I am optimistic. It has been very warm around here.

It was over 80 here in MD, and yes, I was out there "gaying it up" on the golf course. (I had on a matching golf "ensemble." That probably counts in your eyes, right Beef?) ;)

Yes, well, I was playing on a soggy, aerated course with an overcast sky, 50 degrees, slight mist and a 15 mph wind. Since my daughter-in-law has my sock hat, I was forced to wear my Andean wool hat, complete with a chin tie and tassel on the top. Nice and warm but I am glad there were not a lot of witnesses.

Please. When I make comments like that it should say more about me than about you and the rest of the world. The weather is makin me mad. It's bad for golf. By bad I mean it's too good. Today's pretty nippy but somehow it's going to be back in the 70s again on wednesday. Being outside yesterday it felt a lot like southern California at this same time of year.

Too many people still out playing in mid-November. It"s pissin' me off. Go home and watch football for Christ's sake. 2-3 hour morning frost delays on top of the sun setting so early, leaves a very small window for overflowing tee sheets and four and a half hour rounds.

I'm ready to go into my "Beef" mode, that wonderful time of year when everyone puts their clubs away for winter so I can have the course to myself and am able play 18 in 2 1/2 hours in mid-afternoon during the warmest part of the day. And, I don't even have to take a subway to do it.

Had to play the same two nines yesterday to get in 18. There was only an hour till sunset left after finishing the first nine, with the course full ahead of me. So since no one would be starting that late, I went back and replayed the same nine, which was basically empty this time around, finishing 10 minutes after sunset. Happy I got in 18, but would have rather played the whole course. Hopefully the midweek crowd will be less.

Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, the daytime highs are projected to be in the high 50s and 60s this week. So I am sure the course will not be all mine for quite some time. Besides, the course is still in excellent condition. Near perfect. So, anyone in the area, with half an ounce of golf fanaticism in their bones will surely be out there. Though I am ready for it, Beef mode is still away off. :fk

Come to NJ - Saturday was right around 50. Showed up at the course at 12:30 planning on playing 9 and played 18 in about 3 hours although I had to wait on the foursomes in front for the last 2 holes. Sunday was close to 60 - slow round as courses were full and frost delays.

We pretty much have frost every morning, whether or not the temperature reaches 60 degrees later in the day. The problem with frost, as you all know, is that courses don't permit play until around 10am or even a bit later. It gets dark at between 5 and 5:30pm. If one assumes a 4 hour round, the window to start is greatly compressed. Every hacker that wants to play must squeeze into the 10am to 1pm window. These nice days lately have created a circus-like atmosphere for my late season golf. :fkno

Sunny and 62 degrees? Bah!! :fk

Give me 50 degrees, cloudy and a chance of rain. :yess

We had two days of chilly weather over the weekend, but back in the 70's this week. I hope to get out Saturday morning. I'll have to check the schedule hopefully and early football game to clear out the course.

Give me 40 degrees and wind gusts then. Don't need to be dealing with the Bkuehn's of the golf world out there. Don't get me wrong! Those guys are the people you'd least mind being paired up with but come on now, once that long underwear gets put on I don't really feel like socializing with anyone.

Played twice, today and yesterday. Yesterday we started at 10:00am. It was chilly (maybe 45-48 degrees) and foggy. But the fog burned off and we had a sunny 60 degree day. Perfect. Plus we were the 2nd group on the course (1st being a single golfer). We zipped around.

Today was a different story. They had been beating the drum all week about setting a record high of 70+ degrees. Every person within 50 miles of Ann Arbor dragged their golf bag out of the basement and headed for the course. Ordinarily I would have avoided playing but my buddy really wanted to get out.

I made a tee time for 10:20am early in the week thinking there might be a frost delay. Big mistake. We could have teed off at 8:00am with 55 degrees and no frost. Instead, we ended up behind a conga line of groups. As it was, it only took us 4 hours to play 18 and all the waiting was generally tolerable. It could have been a disaster. The place was a zoo when we made the turn and my guess is anyone teeing off after Noon was going to finish in the dark.

Fortunately, this is the end of the really "bad" (i.e. good) weather, the kind of weather that draws the hordes to the course. I'll be out stalking the links next week in my rain suit and sock hat with just a few other fools.

72 degrees and sunny yesterday. Crowds on the course like it was the 4th of July.

Today, not so nice.

So what's everyone's thought on having a "legitimate winter golf contest".

I can pick up a cheap crappy trophy.

Something like:
Score + feels like temp at tee off - inches of snow in last week.

Person with the lowest score by 3/15 gets the trophy for the year.
This is not burger king you can not have it your way.
