Ben Hogan Shuts Down

Post by DougE » Tue Jan 03, 2017 12:32 pm

Had a feeling this was happening when Terry stepped away last year. Sad. They seemed like they were good clubs.

Thanks for the news item. Makes one wonder if Terry's wedge company,SCOR Golf, was doing okay when he acquired the Hogan brand and decided to expand. It seemed like a big step up to go from a tiny niche wedge company to a full scale club manufacturer knocking heads with TaylorMade, Callaway & Titleist, among others.

How would you like to have outfitted yourself with a brand new set of Hogan irons/wedges together with a set of Nike woods!

And yet the legitimategolf family of websites lives on. :gay Someday after all the dust settles it's going to be, like, Titleist, Callaway, and us.

Apparently they are reorganising and stream lining, not shutting down.

Also, TK didn't acquire Hogan, he was brought in as a partner on the club side of the business.

Semantics. Okay they SAY they are not shutting down. Yet, they laid off 100% of their workforce. They can call it reorganizing, but it looks to me like the Ben Hogan Company of 2013-2016 is no longer. I'm sure they are hoping to find a buyer for the existing designs, r&d, molds, inventory, brand identity, etc., but if and until that happens, there is no up and running company.

What, other than negotiations between the one man left and outside potential operators, constitutes NOT shut down? They can call it what they want, but as of now, they are shut down in my view. If they aren't shut down, they need to explain in more detail how that is possible with no workforce. No one in their right mind is going to order a custom made set of clubs from them right now. Who's gonna make 'em? The CEO?

I'm gonna go check out their website and see what it might say.

FYI, here's the press release on their site:

Ben Hogan Golf Equipment Company announces reorganization and restructuring

Fort Worth, Texas: The Ben Hogan Golf Equipment Company announced today that it is going through a period of re-tooling and right-sizing in an effort to become more nimble and profitable in the highly competitive golf equipment business.

The Company has voluntarily implemented a reorganization initiative to minimize expenses and streamline the operation. This included the reduction of a large percentage of the exempt and non-exempt workforce, some of whom will be rehired as contract employees. The company has not declared bankruptcy nor been foreclosed upon, and remains in the business of producing and selling the highest quality and most precise golf equipment in the world.

"Reports of our death have been greatly exaggerated", said Scott White, President and CEO of the Ben Hogan Golf Equipment Company. "While our organization does not look the same today as it did in 2016, we are confident that the changes we are making will make us a stronger and better company in the future".[/i]

Sounds like they will subcontract the work to shops. Some undoubtedly in Taiwan, Mexico, etc... Possibly re-hire a small group of sales/marketing staff.

Yes, I will consider ordering that custom built set just as soon as Scott White announces they are done with their right-sizing.

I suspect Terry left partially because he wanted nothing to do with outsourcing to other countries. He was a Made in USA flag bearer. I would bet overseas production was discussed by the board and even possibly with Scott White, before Terry's departure. I'd love to have a drink with Terry to hear his off-the-record side of this.

I see they have TK wedges. You think ol' Terry used his initials to name wedges? Even on oob, that guy just rubbed me the wrong way.

Yes, that stood for Terry Koehler. He designed them.

That's a new one. Have not heard that particular euphenism before.

Not a huge fan either, but it sounded like the revival of the Hogan brand was like the swan song of Terry's career or something. Sucks that it got all botched by some corporate mismanagement.
Bluto did it

I *think* the Edilon wedge heads were cast overseas...thought I remember reading that or seeing it implied in the equipment discussion.

I actually really liked the SCOR wedges. I tried Nathan's and then went to a SCOR sponsored outing and they had a bunch of them to demo.

If you like the SCOR wedges (I have 3 in my bag), the new Cleveland RTX 3 has the same type of sole.

Looks like the new CEO is saying Terry Koehler may have tried to go too far too fast.

I don't know if the sole is what really got me, which I did like, but the club had a buttery feel. Like my Mizuno irons. Strangely, I've felt my other forged wedges don't have this feeling, so I suspect it had to do with the design of the back. The mass behind the face.

Yep. A bold business decision in the era of declining golf course attendance and places like Dick's sporting goods suffocating with Taylormade club meltdown.
