January/February Golf thread!!!

Post by legitimatebeef » Thu Jan 05, 2017 12:49 pm

Trying my hand at one of these positive, affirmational, BK style threads. (The computer is telling me that affirmational is not a word. Fuck you, it should be!) Seriously though, this is where we will discuss any attempts to play actual golf during these two frosty, for many of us typically un-golfable months. (Those not fortunate enough, please to commiserate here.)

I was quite busy gaying it up in December but at last the weather has my attention now. I understand that some of you southern folks are supposed to get snow. Let me just say from the bottom of my heart that I think that sucks ass. We are on the brink I think, we may get an inch tonight, a small amount but a cause for concern as next week's temperatures are forecast to be frickin' ideal for wintergolf. (My empirical evidence suggests that 36-40ºF results in optimal enjoyment). There is some rain forecast for next Weds. That is a long way off in terms of forecast reliability but believe me I am already looking forward to getting out there and cursing a blue streak across the course.

Played yesterday for the first time in a week, as I have been somewhat sick since Christmas. I just felt if I didn't play yesterday, due to the upcoming forecast, I wouldn't get another chance for awhile. So I forced myself. After a poor front nine due to my rust (and other physical issues), I had a decent back nine, came home, cleaned the clubs and put them away in my office, right next to me at my desk. Hopefully, they will get another outing once it warms up to the mid-40s next week.

In the meantime, we also have a 5 or 6-day forecast of some snow and below freezing temps here in MD. I can't complain too much. My body and health could use the break and the sunny 45-50* days we had since Christmas coaxed me out there twice when I was still pretty sick, which I am sure only made my severe cold/flu symptoms worse. These next few forced days off will be good for me.

I hate winter.

Doug is an unstoppable force. I am not even joking around. It would take armed guards, and like barbed wire to keep this guy away. Proud to call him a moderator of this site. :facepalm (emotional facepalm)

Doug, don't feel bad about getting out there. Given the weather situation there was literally no other choice. Hands were tied basically.

These days my big dilemma is whether to post here on or in the support group. Confusing times. We got dusted overnight but once the sun came up things did not look so bad. Coverage is not that thick, can still see some grass blades poking through. If some little snots want to to make a snowman today, they probably could but it will be dirty and sad.

We got an inch, maybe two here in MD. I'm guessing the course won't be open until some time next week. It's not even supposed to get much above freezing 'til next Wednesday, with rain in the morning. Afternoon looks good, though. I've penciled it in on my calendar.

I played my first round of the year sunday... in some muddy conditions... not that it hurt me lol.

I shot a miserable 103... 1 birdie, no pars.
Pretty shocking to put it nicely.

Only 2nd round in the last year... so I'll give myself a little leeway.
If it stops raining ( its flooding in bakersfield, people even drowning ) I hope to play thursday before men's club sunday.

Been checking the forecast on an hourly basis. I guess that might be an indicator of some emotional pulse. Forecast is up to 100%. While we sleep tonight, the battle between rain and ground-snow will be waged.

Just booked a tee time with two of my regular buddies for late Thursday morning. Forecast 60 degrees. Course will be packed. May have to try to sneak out for a few holes tomorrow (Wed) to see if I remember how to swing. Hopefully there won't be a big crowd, even though the temps are supposed to be high 40s.

And, of course, the physician looking at your shoulder thinks this is a great idea. :school

Meanwhile, I shoveled snow this morning, 40 mph winds threatening the security of my little hovel and my golf bag is in the basement, likely hidden away so I can't find it. :wah

I took my 11 yr old to the driving range tonight.
Taught her the basics and hit 80 balls with the driver.

Used my brothers xx Krank 5 degree
A x tipped 6.5 r15
X tipped 6.5 r11 tp

I think I found my tee height, position in my stance and my reach.
Felt pretty good.
We'll see if it sticks.

Should have taken a pic.new owners really did this place up nice. It was a dirt bowl.

Enjoy the snow beef :)

Yes, I know, I know. But I have been resting it, at least somewhat, for a week. And I really really want to play.

The surgeon reviewed the MRI with me and said there is not an obvious bad tear, though there is something wrong, including a bunch of arthritis and potential scar tissue damage. He said there could be a partial tear, but there is so much going on in my shoulder, he wasn't sure. He did not say I shouldn't play golf. He suggested Physical Therapy and a cortizone shot, but before doing that I am getting a copy of the MRI to show some other professionals including, another, more-shoulder-qualified surgeon (the first doc is the one who just took care of my calf muscle tear and not a shoulder specialist), and a physical therapist who I know to be really focused on sports/golf-related injuries. I want pros who really understand the complexities of the shoulder, particularly the lead shoulder in the golf swing. Acupuncture, chiropractic work, and sports massage are all potential avenues as well, provided the tear isn't too bad.

Whatever is wrong, it is a little different pain than the pain I had before the original surgery 5 years ago, and certainly not as bad. Unfortunately, it seems to affect my swing more than the original full tear injury did due to the fact that this injury must be in a slightly different place within the shoulder and maybe I am using my left side more properly than I used to. Hitting the ground/taking a sizeable divot with an iron when it's muddy or frozen makes me flinch and consequently, I think, making me tense up subconsciously, which is not a good thing in any swing. When I played last week, my normally trusty iron play was not there for the first nine holes until I made some adjustments and forced myself to get through the ball.

I did a 45-minute session of Yoga for Golf on Monday evening, and it hurt quite a bit yesterday as a result. I pushed it too much I think. But, today it's feeling a bit better. I feel like I can play 9, with some caution. I'll tape it up with KT Tape, put a pain patch on it, take some Aleve, and see what happens. I can't let good weather days in the winter go by without attempting to play, just because I might have a more serious injury than I know. I already missed a good part of November and December due to other injuries and sickness. I am chomping at the bit.

I played 2nd round in 6 months today.

http://clubsg.skygolf.com/golfers/score.php?id=18561548

Was a huge improvement over the 103 the other day, even though it was still a 101.

1 par, 9 bogeys, 6 doubles, 1 triple and 1 F**kin QUINTUPLE BOGEY
5 x 3 Putts

It was raining for 5-6 holes.

Driver felt awesome, even though I did slip a few times and pulled a few ( no golf shoes today doh )
Putter was solid, although I pushed a few

Irons were FAT and when they weren't they were 10-20 yards shorter than normal.

Anyways, feels good.
Should translate to good scores soon.

Looking forward to 2 man scramble with my brother for men's club Sunday.
Ssssh, don't tell anyone, but might go play tomorrow too.

Guess who's playing some January golf today. That's right, this guy. Mid 40s plus high winds but feeling bullish nevertheless. Mess with a bull, you get the horns. :thrust
