What's in your bag?

Postby DougE » Fri May 05, 2017 9:45 am

It's not like this is a new topic to golf forums in general, but since I pretty much see this thread, or one like it, on many golf forum sites I visit, I thought we should have one here too. I'm always curious to see and discuss other's club set-ups and choices. And maybe shame them into upgrading to something from this century, if necessary. (Did you ever get yourself a more modern hybrid, BK?)

Also, what else is in your bag that may be different from others or something others might not think to carry? Obviously clubs, balls tees and ball markers, but what else are you packing? As Jesse/Merlin/Falcon50 on Oob replied a few years back, his Smith and Wesson 38 stood out to me as being different. (It may not have specifically been a S&W 38, I don't remember exactly, but you get the point.)

Post a pic if you like. I enjoy looking at pictures of golf stuff. Okay so this might be a bit corny, but I admit, I can be a little obsessive compulsive about golf gear. I can guarantee you this though, it is NOT considered corny at GolfWRX the king of all golf forums. So lay off me! :fu

I'll post mine shortly. Need to take a pic first. Feel free to start without me.

C'mon, humor me.

So the quick stuff.
Driver - Ping G15
3w - Titleist F13 (Thanks Doug)
3h - TM Burner (yes the original one
4i-PW - KZG ECII
GW (49*) - Scor
SW (53/12) - Cleveland 588
LW (58/12) - Cleveland RTX 2.0
Putter - Cure RX3F
Balls - MG C4

Also in my bag there is athletes foot spray (ie impact identification for driver), 2 alignment rods, range finder, sun screen, bug spray and half the time a fold up tripod for my phone.

The "interesting" thing that use to be in my bag when I lived in Florida. I had a fishing rod. There were so many ponds on golf courses in Florida that when rounds took 5+ hours I'd catch some bass while waiting on a tee box.

Other than that everything has always been pretty standard.

Thank you for playing along JFish, and indulging me. I keep my foot spray in the trunk and use it the same way you do. But, I also keep impact stickers/tape in my bag.

Here's mine as of 5.5.2017:

Titleist 915D2 Driver with Diamana 62 x5 ct Stiff (Blueboard)
(upgrading shortly to 917D2, same shaft)
Titleist 915F 3W with Diamana 60 x5 ct (Redboard)
Titleist 915F 5W with Diamana 70 x5 ct (Blueboard)
Titleist 816H 21* Hybrid w/Diamana 70 x5 ct (Blueboard)
Titleist AP1-716 5i & 6i with TT XP90
Titleist AP2-716 7i-PW with TT XP90
Titleist/Vokey 50.08 F Grind Wedge w/ TT S200
Titleist/Vokey 54.10 S Grind Wedge w/TT S200
Titleist/Vokey 58.12 K Grind Wedge w/TT S200
Titleist/Scotty Cameron Newport 2 Studio Select Putter w/Large Matador Grip

Titleist Mid-Staff Bag
Titleist 14-Way Stand Bag (for the occasional times I walk)

Yes, I drank the Titleist Kool-aid, and it tastes pretty damn good! :P

Let's see, what else is in my bag(s)?

My drug store pouch with band aids, sport tape, Advil, tissues, Neosporin, and other things for minor health issues.
Bug spray
Sun block
Elbow and wrist braces/supports
I keep a couple new FJ Soft Touch gloves in my bag at all times, but also a right hand FJ glove as well. (Sometimes I need it when my hands are all dry and cracked or split in places making it painful to swing. I actually prefer to wear no glove on either hand, but when necessary, love the feel of the Soft Touch.)
Extra Club Glove towel
iPhone holder which mounts on an alignment rod for taking swing videos
Titleist adjustment tool/torque wrench
Impact tape
Rangefinder/Extra battery
Rulebook
Rain gear/Rain gloves
Extra scorecards
No guns

Driver: Callaway Big Bertha Alpha 2014
3 Wood: Callaway Big Bertha 2014
5 Wood: Callaway Big Bertha 2014
5i-Pw + Gap Wedge: Mizuno JPX 900 Forged
Sand Wedge: Mizuno T7 55.09
Lob Wedge: Mizuno T7 60.10
Putter: Odyssey #7 (mallet with 'fangs' in the back, like Stenson uses) with SuperStroke 3.0 grip
Ballz: Callaway Chrome Soft or ProV1x, always bought used in mint condition from drmulligans.com

All in a C-130 Sun Mountain cart bag, either mounted on a Sun Mountain Speed Cart when I walk (about 75% of the time) or on a riding cart. I never need the legs.

Also in the bag, besides the assortment of tees, all markers, divot repair tools, the Callaway wrench (just on case, I never tinker with the adjustments), rain gloves, a rain jacket, warmth layer, rangefinder Leupold GX-3i with a spare battery, impact tape, sunscreen, bug spray, sports tape, groove cleaner brush, an extra towel (small), a spare FJ glove in addition to the one I use currently. And a YETI water bottle: it keeps ice cold for a day or so and definitely for 4-5 hours even when replenished with water as long as it starts full of ice cubes.

And no, I don't have a sherpa!
I'm gonna go low this time...

Totally agree. I usually find ice left over in my Yeti the next day. Great to bring along for a round on a hot day.

Probably only JPJ has a dodgier set then me.

Driver: Titleist 905R from the dawn of 460cc heads, I like the Graphite Design shaft, it feels solid.
3w: Nike SQ II, same model used by Tiger back when he was still a beloved figure. I think I need a heavier shaft now.
5w: Taylormade V-steel, probably the oldest thing in there. Bought off the secondhand market. Very old, very beat up, but one of my favorites! It has a TT steel shaft which I feel is pretty unique and cool. The ball flight of this club is tits. I also abuse this club unfortunately, it's the designated club for hitting off rocky lies. I feel bad about that. This club has been so good to me.
3i: Titleist 690.cb
4-PW: Titleist 690.mb also very old, but very classic. Some of the best looking irons I ever saw. They generally give me confidence. I rarely ever think about getting new irons.
54.12 Nike VR a cool forged wedge from the golden era of TW/Nike, getting worn out by now
60.08 Nike SV decent cast wedge, it's beat up and I don't seem to pull it out much lately. Maybe will replace with a 58.
Ping G2 Pal, very cool putter you don't see much of. Like an anser, but smaller.

Titleist ultralight stand bag in black. Ratty old "Dunlop" furry headcover on the driver, no covers on woods. Altogether its a sleek inconspicuous looking set, perfect for golfers who have to take public transit with a bunch of morons. It's a minimalist bag but it fits shoes which I keep in there at most times :breaking another burden of the car-less golfer. Clipped to the bag are a small black microfiber towel and one of those stiff wire brushes for irons which I am guessing is kind of bush league; I like them though. Also in the bag at most times is a dusty forgotten old bag of nuts and raisins.

I realize that my bag is empty compared to many of you. I also have something called a Trunk Caddy in the trunk of my car at all times, basically a suitcase with a breathable lid. In it I have spare gloves, tees, club wrench, lots of towels, and rain gear. Most importantly I always have a change of golf clothes for those day when my plane lands at 2 and nobody in the office would notice a 4 pm tee off.

A very confidence inspiring, low profile head. Great for hitting off tight fairways. After going through a period a few years back, where I wasn't gaming any FW, I put a G25 (16.5 degree 4W) in my bag to help me rebuild confidence with my woods off the deck. Shortly after I put a Titleist 3W in too. For awhile I played both the G25 and the Titleist, using the Ping off the tight grass and the Titleist off the tee and lofty lies. Eventually I got enough confidence in my 3W play that I took the Ping out. But, I still keep it around as a back up. I would recommend the G25 FW to anyone who needs more confidence with a 3W. The only other FW I can think of with such a nice shallow face would be an old Adams Tight Lies, circa 2011-12 era.

Really bad for forged irons. Will scratch them. Use a plastic brush on forged. On the other hand, those musclebacks of yours probably can't be hurt much more than they already are at this point.

Damn, if you can hit those old MBs, you'd be amazed at what you can do with today's forged irons. If you get the chance to demo them, try some Mizzys. Or Titleist MB-716s.

Driver: Taylormade R1 (Matrix Red Tie Shaft)
3W: Taylormade Burner High Launch
5W: Taylormade R7 CGB Max (oldest club in the bag)
4H: Adams Tight Lies 2
5I-PW: Mizuno MP-53
60*/56*/50*: Taylormade Tour Preferred ATV
Putter: SeeMore mFGP (just installed a superstroke counterbalanced grip)

Other than that, I have pretty standard stuff in the bag (Leupold GX1 rangefinder, gloves, tees, markers). I do have the arccos golf system on my clubs though, and a Boston Terrier clubhead cover on my driver.

For ball markers, i have some masters ones, one from the US Open at Oakmont, Clemson markers, and some foreign loose change; there's really no rhyme or reason to when I use which.

The only unique thing would be stampings on my wedges. I stamped some Clemson football stuff on my 56* and 60* ('All In' and 'BYOG'), but figuring out what to do with the 50*. I stripped all the paint off and only paint-filled the stampings and degrees in all white.

Or given it is your 50* wedge you could stamp a number of 50 cent songs on it that would be pseudo appropriate for golf.

"In da club"
"Just a little bit"
"Hustlers Ambition"
"P.I.M.P" not really much golf related pun here I just think it would be funny stamped on a wedge.

That's what I was afraid of, but I don't see any real damage after using the brush for a few years.

I believe that it's a common misconception. I've also used brass brush on forged irons for years and it doesn't scratch them.

Depends on the type of metal. Some forgings use really soft metal. Mizzy used to have issues with some of their forged clubs. One of the reasons they were known for such a soft feel off the face. Older Titleists too. I just make it a habit to use a hard plastic bristle.

The mainstays:

Driver: Ping G15
Fairway Wood: Ping K15

I need a bit more forgiveness with the fairway wood, so I opt for the more forgiving K-series.

Irons:
Adams Idea Pro Black Forged
Adams Idea Pro
Taylor Made Rescue

I switch it up a bit. When my game was in top form, I used the Pro Black Forged musclebacks from 3i all the way up to pw. because I loved the instant feedback. These days, I'm playing the semi-hollow body Idea Pro series. I alternate between using the Taylor Made Rescue clubs for my long irons. The truth is, I absolutely suck at hitting hybrids. I need a 3i that can get through the deep rough, and I need to break out the Rescue clubs every once in a while to remind myself of that.

Putter:
Odyssey. I have no idea what it's called, but it's a light-weight mallet putter that is probably best known for the fact that it is almost short enough to be a kids' putter. I get way down when I putt.

Chipper:
I carry a chipper for hitting out of the desert. I tried it around the green a few times, but one of my friends once asked me why I would even consider taking a wedge out of my hands in those situations. It's a good point. Now, I only use the chipper for lies that are going to hurt with a full swing.

Wedges:
My bread-and-butter clubs. I play Scratch wedges exclusively. I currently only carry two wedges in my bag, a 52* and a 58*. I seem to have lost my 56*, which was my all time most favorite club in the history of the universe.

I need new wedges, and I need new woods. I'm not prepared to spend that kind of money. My irons will probably last for a few more years yet, but that's probably only because I play two different sets.

Other Stuff:
Magnetic ball markers...lots of them.
Tees....lots of them
A couple of sleeves of extra balls
Sharpies for marking said balls
Extra spikes. If I slip during a swing, I'm changing out at least one spike on the next tee box
Spike wrench.
Spare pencils
Rulebook
Sunscreen
Bug Spray
Ball mark fixing tool

I think that's about it.
