3rd Annual Frozen Balls Challenge - 2018-2019

Post by bkuehn1952 » Thu Jan 10, 2019 9:10 am

Looks to be a two way race between LB and DougE. Both are golf maniacs when it comes to marginal weather. Gbogey has been kind of quiet as have several other potential contenders. We are not even going to consider the left coasters and our southern brethren, who think 50 degrees is hardship golf because they have to wear long pants.
Let's Play 36
GHIN Handicap: 7.8 … 9.2 … Let’s just say I am around a 14!

My bathroom is nearly done, so my focus is turning back to golf. I might get 2-3 rounds in before the end of the challenge haha

I have two 78s and a 77 under my belt so far for 2019 winter golf. But temps were in the 40s and I've been playing from the whites in the cold because the blue tees have been moved to the black teeing ground to allow for healing of the over-used blue teeing grounds. That's too far for this old man. Especially with the limited flight of frozen balls hit by frozen bodies. And I am using my new cart cover/enclosure on colder days. Does that factor in? I'm hoping to go much lower in the days ahead, so I don't have to package up the "Cup" and send it to anyone. I'm lazy. Besides, as long as you don't look closely and read what it says, it looks good alongside my other trophies. And it's plastic, so no polishing necessary!

This southern brethren does not own a pair of long pants for the golf course, and will golf as cold as they let us out. Our problem is our grass does not react kindly to below freezing temps.
I will stand in the fairway, I want to be out of your range.

I'm not sure where I fit these days. I'm sort of southern brethren - I live in what they call the Mid-South - I do play in 40's whereas most people here won't play below 55. I like playing in pants. In fact I prefer weather where pants are comfortable over shorts weather. But as I knew when I lived in NJ I would never win I really don't know the rules. I did shoot a 77 last week in sub 50's weather (barely, 48 or 49). And I have lots of mud on play in.

Still don't know the rules and not wanting to win and have to deal with the trophy, but went out today at 42 degrees - colder than my norm but yesterday was washed out and next weekend doesn't look good so I thought I'd give it a try. Really wasn't too bad until last 4 holes when the wind kicked up. Shot nice 75 (course is par 70/68.8/114) and given the conditions probably one of my best ever. Only 3 other guys on the course.

Well, we have about one month left. Personally, I am leaning toward Beef, based on sheer volume of play and resolute adherence to the Rules of Golf. We need some scores, descriptions of playing conditions, etc...

Right now the Frozen Mitten is encased in about 2 inches of ice, sleet and frozen snow. My chances of teeing it up before March 15 are limited.

Yeah, I'm leaned towards beef too. To be fair it really hasn't been cold enough here to play a round in the 30s. When it's that cold it's been raining.

Can't argue with that. I'm shot out of a cannon lately. Wintergolf season this year has been exceptionally gay.

So tomorrow is the last day of the challenge.

From me shooting 96 killing my will to play much in the last couple months, to Doug having to deal w/ injury and weather. I feel like there has really only been 1 reasonable choice for this years Frozen Balls Challenge.

Does anyone have any other nominees outside of beef (the real beef, not Andrew Johnson)?

Maybe BK can get out on some frozen ground in the next 2 days and post a really low score to knock beef off the podium?

I'm playing today, but it's supposed to be near 70, so even if I SHOOT 70, it won't qualify!

I am sitting in a hotel in Texas. No golf for me. :wah

Wedding was cool. The mayor of Boerne, TX, presided. He looks and sounds like what we imagine a life long Texan to be.

I enlisted the youngest grandson, 8, to help decorate the bride & groom's car. Balloons with messages and cans on a string tied to the back. My youngest grandson thought it was very cool to trick his oldest brother. :thumbs

I vote Dougie. He overcame some issues and played consistent good golf and routinely took on severe conditions.

No it's now the forums trophy.

I meant who currently has it at their house.

Of course DougE and Beef are solid contenders and deserving of the win, but I’ll argue that Gobey’s 75 in 42F weather with wind and mud is a solid entry too and I’ll give him my vote. 👍

Do you mean to tell me you wouldn't want to display this classless-plastic classic looking beauty?

Well I was going to vote for gbogey, but the desire to not have the physical trophy is a slap in the face of the competition. So beef is getting my vote.
