Yeah I could see that. I mean they have a large selection of approved house colors. I don't know how people can choose from the 6 colors, it's just too many options.

I'm still waiting for your food recommendations for Irvine beef (or duke).

I only have 1 night unplanned this time, but I go out there 1 or 2 times a year for work. So for future reference it would be good.

I was being dishonest with the fun part of "food and fun". I don't know where to find fun in Irvine. You are staying at the Spectrum, which is where all the action is, you should have all you need there. There is a place inside there I genuinely enjoy, it's called Saigon Pearl. Not sure about the sandwiches but the pho noodle soup is top notch. There is also a Korean fusiony type place called Urban Seoul which I thought was decent. Finally I recently dined at the Del Frisco Grille and it was fine, typically 'merican steakhouse chow. If you go here note that it is a Grille and not a Grill and as such, wear a clean shirt.

Yeah inside spectrum I've been to some "Mexican" restaurant Javiers or something (really more tex-mex or cali-mex than true Mexican food). My manager at the time loved watching real house wives and they went there a lot apparently. She said she wanted to go there, and I wasn't going to pitch a fit over it. Plus I normally like Mexican food.

Also I've gone to Wood Ranch BBQ Grill (BBQ isn't BBQ when it's cooked on a grill). It's stupid to go to a BBQ place in California when my entire life I've lived in the south (and Florida), but again I was with someone else and that is what we went with. Then I've also gone to the Yard House.

I wasn't impressed any of those 3, well Yard House isn't bad but I have one 15 min from my house, so why go there? I mean all of them were fine, but forgettable. Maybe I'll give Saigon Pearl a chance on the 1 day I don't have anything planned. But I'll be with 2 other people from Virginia, so it will depend on what they want as well.

I really liked Gena or what ever it was. I'd never done Korean BBQ before and I thought it was interesting. I mean the food was ok for what it was, but I hadn't ever done that type of restaurant before. So it's worth a try next time you are there. But I suspect you have Korean BBQ places in NYC, so it may not be interesting to you.

I'm not too familiar with the restaurants in Irvine. I'm sure there's some good places. Irvine, in general, plays quite cookie cutter in my mind. You might find some less corporatized fare in Laguna or Newport. Downtown Santa Ana for Mexican food.

Might but is it really worth the trouble. Is my question. Still in Orange County after all. There might be a few pockets of individuality here and there but by and large there are no secrets to uncover. When in Rome do as the Romans do. When in Irvine go to the Spectrum.

Agreed for the most part. Just trying to be helpful. I love really good food and often lament not living in a big city. Too much of a headache to drive to L.A. for a meal, though.

So the only new places I went we're the Marriott (always fun eating at the hotel) and Habana.

Habana was a surprisingly good Cuban restaurant in spectrum. And that is saying a lot given I grew up in little Havana aka Tampa

I do. In fact, it was there that I was introduced to it by my older sister when I was a youth.

The down side to Habana is it's "fancy". Every good Cuban place in Tampa is a hole in the wall that is dirt cheap.

Try Versailles if ever in LA area, think you'd like it. Big, old-fashioned portions. There is a different Versailles in Miami, not as good IMO.

Completed one of my "major" championships the past 3 days. This marked my 28th Ann Arbor Men's City Golf Championship. One of my fellow competitors was born the year I first started playing the event (1990). I am not used to playing at yardages of 6,600-6,700 anymore and my expectations were fairly limited. Surprisingly, at least to me, the biggest drag on my scoring was my short game.

My 252 total (84,85,83) put me in a tie for 50th place out of a field of 107, so my incompetence was matched by a fairly large percentage of the field.

Sunday, I was failing badly. 4-putted from 20 feet (uphill & straight) on #8 and made the turn with a "46". 2 1/2 rounds of walking in 90+ humid degrees had left me a bit fatigued and sore. Several years ago I had made a pledge that if I could not walk 18 and break 90 each day, I would stop playing in the event. My streak was in jeopardy.

I wish I could say during my "comeback" I struck the ball brilliantly on the back nine. The truth is I really had to grind hard. Pulling out an 83 for the day did not involve pretty golf. It was messy. I was so happy just to have the whole thing over when the final putt dropped. I needed some AC and beer, STAT!! ;)
Let's Play 36
GHIN Handicap: 7.8 … 9.2 … Let’s just say I am around a 14!

Brian, that is impressive at that yardage. Actually, that is impressive in tournament play at any yardage. You've got my respect. Well done.
