Man in the High Tower. Pretty neat, I'm about five episodes in. Set in early 60's after we loose WWII to Germany and Japan.

Our AppleTV device has been flaking out lately. I decided to replace it with an Amazon FireTV Stick - it's great! I recommend it over the more expensive Apple device.

I haven't cut the cord yet, but am tempted. Most of the stuff we watch is either on Netflix or channels found on Sling. The only sticking point is that my wife is hooked on idTV. She falls asleep to it.

Binge watched the whole 1st season of Stranger Things today with my wife and older kid. Good stuff. Especially if you're a child of the 80's.jfurr wrote:I have two episodes left in the Stranger Things series.... I am enjoying it
Re: ... about to put ______ in the video player
Totally. These producers have figured out our demographic is ripe for nostalgia now. Check out Halt And Catch Fire. (But not with the kids...)Duke of Hazards wrote:Binge watched the whole 1st season of Stranger Things today with my wife and older kid. Good stuff. Re: ... about to put ______ in the video player
Watched "Arrival" recently and enjoyed it a lot. I feel that fans of "Contact" or possibly "Interstellar" could be down with it. That Amy Adams is such a plain-vanilla fox.

Re: ... about to put ______ in the video player
I watched and was kinda disappointed tbh. It was all so literal and everything happened so easy. I enjoyed Interstellar more I think.
+1 on Amy Adams though she kept remaining bring me of Jenna Fisher (the Office) which was distracting.
Have you watched Beauty is Embarrassing yet?
Or Extract?

I really enjoyed the entire "Sherlock" series. The final episode, frankly, was a bit disappointing to me.Duke of Hazards wrote:Watching Sherlock

Watched The Big Short - liked it.
My wife just called me - she's having our niece's over Friday night & they're gonna watch a movie... & wants me to pick a movie they'll all like. How they hell does she think I can pick a movie 3! ladies will like???
I suggested the cooking channel.

Re: ... about to put ______ in the video player
I agree it was good, but it was very 1 sided.Coda1850 wrote:Watched The Big Short - liked it.
Where is the part about people taking personal responsibility for what they can & can't afford? I mean each time I've bought a house the bank has been willing to give me double what I know I can afford. Including my 1st house purchase in 2009, 15 months after Lehman Bro's collapse. I don't go out and spend that because I'm not dumb.
People's inability to take responsibility for themselves was as much of a factor in the financial crisis as the predatory lending tactics by the banks, the SEC's inability to fairly rate a bundle of shit, and the numerous issues with accurately pricing CDS's.
The more f'ed up thing is we are currently repeating the issues above with vehicle financing (well at least the personal responsibility, & predatory lending tactics). I went to get a car loan, they asked me to do it online. The online form had 5 questions (outside name and SSN). There was no down payment required, and there was no need to have the car as collateral for the loan. Basically with 5 questions they gave me an unsecured loan. I could have bought a $50k car unsecured and no one would have batted an eye (other than me when the monthly payments started). The only difference is 1) Car loans are generally rated lower than home loans, because people aren't expecting the underlying asset to appreciate (excluding my loan which doesn't have an underlying asset). and 2) CDS's and CDX's are now traded on a much broader scale, so the pricing is more closely scrutinized.
When getting my car loan at the bank, I even had this conversation with the lady at the bank.
Banker: "It is super easy. You can use this website, to get an unsecured loan with just 5 questions. It should take less than 15 min and by the end of the next business day the money will be in your account."
Me: "Unsecured? As in you wont be holding the title of the car?"
Banker: "Correct"
Me: "Do you have any clue on how much I could get a loan for?"
Banker: "With your credit score you should be able to get $50k pretty easily."
Me: "Wow this is as easy as buying a house pre-financial crisis."
Banker: (in an excited voice) "I know right!!"
10 min later
Me to Wife: "I don't think she realized I was being sarcastic."
But I wouldn't be surprised if we have a "mini" financial crisis with cars in the next 5-10 years. It will not be nearly as big as the last one, but we are heading down the same road (no pun intended).
This is not burger king you can not have it your way.
Re: ... about to put ______ in the video player
Yeah. People are dumb shits tho. No way can they police themselves. "We're" doing it again. Not one bit fucking surprised. I bought my house in July '06 so... Bought one I could afford & have paid my mortgage on time, every time. Also paid extra toward the principal every single payment.
That story ^ is hilarious.
& back to the movie - I liked how it was "put together". It was also infuriating to watch.

Re: ... about to put ______ in the video player
Watched the latest installment of the "Star Wars" franchise. It was alright. Far better I thought than the previous one, Star Wars 7 or whatever it was. The aerial battles are pretty cool in this one, they are depicted on a scale which I'd think probably makes George Lucas jealous. Other than a few necessarily familiar motifs it felt like this movie was liberated from most of the restrictions placed on Ep 7 and thus is not nearly as heavy-handed as 7. It was unsettling however, the use of CGI to resurrect both the actor who played "Grand Moff Tarkin" in SW4, as well as a young Carrie Fisher. A bit disturbing to think of the future of movies if CGI continues to be used this way.

That's right, I forgot about that part. You get to see a side of Vader that you've not quite seen before. That guy can move really fast, if pissed off enough. His voice though, definitely sounded like an aged James Earl Jones. I think they should've got that guy who does the voiceover for the Arby's ads instead.
