Car question

Post by jasonfish11 » Wed May 25, 2016 5:12 pm

Does anyone here have a good knowledge of cars?

Mine is generally pretty good, but I ran into a situation that has me a little perplexed and am soliciting advice.

I have had a rattle noise in the back end of my car for 2-4 weeks. I've been lazy and haven't had anyone look at it. It rattles in gear and out of gear and the noise is louder at certain RPMs (really bad when the car is cold).

My first reaction was it was a loose baffle in the muffler. So I wasn't too concerned unless it plugged the exhaust causing a pressure backup and some gasket to blow.

I dropped my car off at a muffler shop and didn't mention I had an idea of what might be wrong. They inspected it and told me the front CATS (my car has 4 cats 2 on each side) deteriorated and the junk from the cats flowed into the back cats clogging them. This caused the pressure to backup and it blew out the gasket between the 2 cats.

The thing is I replaced all 4 cats 14 months ago. To me this means either 1 of 2 things.
1) the cats they put in 14 months ago (when I was in TN) are garbage.
2) the guy at the muffler shop is FOS and trying to remove me from $1400.

So my question is do these symptoms and diagnosis match to you? I'm planning on getting a 2nd opinion and if they say it is the CATS I'm likely to be suing the company that built the CATS that were put in 14 months ago to get them to pay all costs to replace them with some non piece of shit. But that will be a massive pain in my ass.

*Also in VA they visually inspect the exhaust each year. If you dont have the CATS that your make and model is supposed to have you could get a fine up to $2500, and $25,000 if you were the person who put in straight pipe. So straight pipe isn't really an option.

So it is the cats. Got home took a meat thermometer to the pipe in front of the cats. Instantly pegged at 220* (max on thermometer). Cooled it off and took a temp behind cats it crept up to 130*.

I'm so fucking pissed they better repair this for free.

I am glad you know about cars because all I know is where one puts the gas (even that can be a bit of a challenge).

I don't know shit about cars. What I generally do is ignore any problem then trade it in.
But my cats, if kept indoors, usually last about 15 years.

Good luck.

So my truck is now dead to me. While looking at the cats I noticed the body bushing was super dry rotted. As in I could flick it and it would fall apart.

Between that and the cats I'm staring at $2500-$3000 in repairs and it has 130k miles on it. So Saturday I'm trading it in. Its a sad day, going to be even worse on Saturday given I'm too cheap to get another truck at this point in my life. So I'll be getting a car

Wow they actually are giving me full replacement cost (installation included) up to what I paid on the original invoice.

So tomorrow I'm getting new cats for $25 out of pocket. I can't believe how easy it was for me to get them to pay 100% of the fix. There are still 1 or 2 companies with quality customer service.

Still enough issues I'm going to start looking but with the cats fixed it isn't urgent.
