What part of America gave this guy an accent that pronounces "Rome" like that?

Northwestern Canada. He has a rural lilt to his inflections which leads me to believe that it's not urban, and his dipthongs definitely have a Canadian tinge. Some of his words sound like they could be from Iowa or northern Missouri, but I'd put my money on rural Canada.

He doesn't have the southern twang. Even people with an intellectual accent who are from the deep south have a southern twang (think Frank Underwood from House of Cards....he does the South Carolina accent extremely well).

But this guess is strictly from about three sentences from a documentary that was probably rehearsed.

I know people with this accent. I'm not sure it's specific to South Carolina, but definitely southern. There are many accents around there here parts.

I listened to a bit more. I'd be willing to wager money with even odds that this guy is from Canada. Give me the proper odds, and I'd even go so far as to say northern Saskatchewan or Alberta. It's tricky, though, because he doesn't use "eh" at the end of his sentences. The words like "out" and "pound" give it away, though.

His Wikipedia entry says he was born in the US, but not where, nor where he was brought up.

Plus it's Wikipedia, so...

He's also listed as a US Historian and went to school on the east coast (Harvard, Princeton) and is currently at College of Holy Cross in Mass. Sounds like he's from the US somewhere.

Holy Cross is near me... I've played ball in their gym. Think the last one was a charity 3 on 3 event - no refs, & a brawl broke out.

I met a guy today that had this exact same accent. So I asked him where he was from because he thought he had a cool accent. His response?

"It's a speech impediment. I have to talk around it."
