Diving deeper into the Beatles mystique, at both ends of the career spectrum.

All Things Must Pass, what an album, maybe one of the best sounding rock records ever, up there with Dark Side of the Moon. Great songs, big production. I think this eclipses anything George did with the Beatles.

Also picked up all 140+ tracks of the Beatles BBC broadcast recordings in the internet used CD bin, two 2-disc sets for like $13. CDs be cheap now! Early Beatles is great. They were a such self-contained entertainment powerhouse, original songs plus a huge ass repertoire of early American rock, rockabilly, r&B, country.

I am digging this old track a lot lately. Sounds kind of like "Oh Yoko", except it doesn't suck.

Had to drive to the coast and back today for work and killed the time on the road listening to an excellent couple of audio recording podcasts with interviews of studio owners and engineers. Really enjoyed it, need to look into more podcasts.

One of the interviews was with David Barbe who owns a studio in Athens but back in the early 90's recorded our old band. So part of his interview about his past included discussing that time period. It was really interesting and inspirational not just for music/recording types.

Jfurr, I got a suggestion for your next trip to Alabama. Let's play in Muscle Shoals (extreme northwest Alabama), and while you are here, maybe you can also take a tour of the Fame recording studios.

I will stand in the fairway, I want to be out of your range.

So, in case there are any other hip hop fans out there, A Tribe Called Quest released their final album today. It was an 18 year wait, and it was worth it.

I was lying in bed doing some chronological math. If Mr. BK was born in the year 1952, that would mean that his formative years align just about perfectly with the rock and roll era. I bolted upright. "Sinatra is your parents' music, man!" :fk

But then it hit me that most of the music that I love best, actually predates my own existence. :facepalm

Okay so I am a dinosaur in my own right. I listen to my own versions of golden oldies. I don't care. Jimmy Page is objectively more hip than Glenn Miller or whoever.

I used to think I was a scholar in Beatlesology. But over the last couple months I have realized that I was Bachelor's degree-level at best. Coffee-table book type knowledge at worst. I think I've reached Masters-level expertise now. I've learned so much just by listening to their BBC sessions--about their influences, their early sound, musicianship, group dynamic, etc. Let's face it the Beatles are like the Bach-Beethoven-Mozart of the 20th century. In that sense I am very cultured.

I guess Adele cleaned up at the Grammys again. I'm sorry but I find her "Wah, I'm a jilted, heartbroken chubby loser" schtick so boring at this point. Crack open a goddamn newspaper, read a book, find something else to write about. Same with that Ed Sheeran. God gave him a musical talent and he goes and uses it to make one creepy, lecherous ode to women's bodies after another. Another chubby one-note idiot who really ought to open a newspaper.
