Video Application for Newport Cup

Post by bkuehn1952 » Mon Mar 06, 2017 9:09 am

There is another website that is running an audition for 12 places on one of two teams. A faux "Ryder Cup" contest will be run in October at Talamore Golf Resort (NC). Just for the heck of it I decided to include myself in the selection process. Winning a spot doesn't really get you much since one pays the cost of transport, room, board, golf. I have tried to talk sjduffer into "applying" but so far he was resisted.

At any rate, the purpose of the post is not to talk up this event but to talk about the project of putting together a video application. It has been fun plotting out what I am going to say & do on the video. I suspect my video may be a bit different than the other ones submitted by the applicants.

The worst part is watching my swing on video. :facepalm I knew I was no Adam Scott but I hoped I sort of looked like a golfer. Nope. Look like a fat 65 year old grandpa. :fkno I may need to hire a stunt double for the shots where "I" am hitting the ball. I will handle the close ups ... hmmm... maybe I need a male model and a stunt double.

When the worldwide premiere occurs, you guys will be the last to know.

bkuehn1952 - Multi-Media Star

Post by bkuehn1952 » Tue Mar 14, 2017 9:38 am

Against my better judgment, I am posting the following video. I know some on the east coast are currently deprived of golf opportunities. We in the Midwest understand how hard it is for golfers during winter. For this reason, a slightly golf-related diversion might take your minds away from Winter Storm Zorba or whatever the Weather Channel calls this weather pattern.

I also feel good knowing that most people no longer have an attention span beyond 45 seconds, thanks to "Instachat" and "Snapgram". So the odds of anyone actually watching the entire video are roughly equivalent to my playing Augusta National in a couple weeks.

Well, I attempted to follow the instructions for a YouTube link. I am no tech so I can't give you any advice. I can see it. Perhaps I have unconsciously blocked people's ability to view it. Oh well ... never mind... everyone can go back to shoveling snow.

I was able to watch it.

I liked it. The wind made some parts hard to hear, but I think it was good.

Love the video and everything, but was a new topic really necessary? I merged em. BK pretends to be a modest wallflower, but clearly it's just an act.

Finally saw it. Not sure what you did or didn't do, but it is now showing up fine for me. Watched every second. It's tough getting me to pay attention for 17+ minutes, but your video succeeded.

Very interesting. Fun. And great to get to know you a little bit better. I'm pulling for you to get selected. :thumbs

(Don't forget us little people if you do make the cut.)

Certified fresh. 8.5/10. Some cinematographic wizardry going on and the character development was on point. Would watch again.

Gonna go ahead and disagree there. Way too much diamond-shaped wipe.

Also I felt the end piece (the job interview portion of the tape) dragged on a bit. Would've been cool to intersperse those with the action segments, which let's face it are the real meat of the story. Those I actually found gripping. "Let's see if I can make a two-putt here." Seriously though I enjoyed the golf. Make it a weekly web-show. I will tune in.

Well done, sir. The on-course segment made my face hurt from sympathy pains at the cold temps. Enjoyed the interview, the trophy win with your dad :thumbs

Good luck on getting into the Cup. And a shout out to a fellow forum member SJDuffers :thumbs

This is more than you asked for but I am bored right now. I want to be on the golf course but the weather is not cooperating. :fkno

The process is to announce one member each month for the West and East team. Six selections.

The first were selected 2/28. A 1.0 index guy from SC and a 3.5 index guy from CA. The selections will concentrate first on low single digit players and then move up the scale. The criteria for selection are:

Index under 10.0 on or about 8/15/2017.
"Regular" poster/user of the site
Have a "good reputation" - whatever that means for an online community
Complete and post a video playing a par 3, 4 and 5 and then answer the series of questions

As an 8.4 index, consideration for me (and sjduffers if he ever applies) would be the end of June or July. Since I have not stated I am definitely "in" if selected, there is no chance of my early selection. While it is fun to be part of a "Golf Buddy Trip", most/all of the expenses are on me (travel, room, food, beverage, golf). While they negotiated a discount, it is still going to be $1,000 or so all in. I have been on trips where I knew almost no one very well and had a good time, so that is not a big issue. Still, the amount of play (36 holes each of the first two days - 18 the last) and the level of ability (one applicant is an assistant pro) are a bit daunting. No one likes to be the worst player and that could very well be my role. :facepalm

The last one of these was in AZ two years ago. 11 of the 12 players from 2 years ago have applied so it must have been a decent time.

That might put me off a little, or at least make me a bit uneasy. I think I would like it more if it was a completely new group of 12. No one has a "comfort" level with anyone else to start. Makes for a fairer fight.

Exactly. And I just went over the 10.0 mark at the last revision (10.3), and it may go higher still given the way my 10 low scores are arranged in the 20 (all bunched up). Now, there is still time to reverse the situation, but when there are some +handicap players in the mix, with 300 yards drives, it's going to be tough to play from the same tees as them, lol...

I believe the intent of the captains is to really mix it up and not rely so much on past players. It sounds like a good time, but I am not sure my body can take 5 rounds in 3 days...

Bottom line, I am still holding out for applying...
