Solar Eclipse

Post by jfurr » Tue Jun 27, 2017 7:20 pm

Here in Columbia SC things are starting to get exciting for the big Eclipse day. Supposed to be one of the most viewed solar eclipses in history. We are in the direct line of full coverage, and supposedly we are also right were the longest total eclipse will be experienced. Many many visitors expected to ascend on the city that weekend. There are a bunch of eclipse themed events going to be happening all weekend.

I was not aware of that. I remember a solar eclipse happening in the summer of 1992 or thereabouts, using a cardboard pinhole "lens" to see it. Honestly this is the first I'm hearing about the upcoming one. Sounds like a good excuse for a party, take drugs and shit, why not. :ohyeah

Shitballs, read up a little on this and now I want to be in Columbia, S.C. for EclipseCon. Mrs. Beef does too. Dig this quote from the official site:

“For those who choose to experience this eclipse outside the path, a partial eclipse is all they will see. Even if the sun is 99.9% eclipsed for these observers, they will not experience the full, jaw-dropping, knee-buckling, emotionally-overloading, completely overwhelming spectacle that is totality.” – Dan McGlaun, veteran of twelve total solar eclipses

Wow! Furrdude, I hope you are emotionally and spiritually prepared for the event. It sounds pretty fuckin heavy.

TOTALITY

Reminds me of a Muhammad Ali poem ...

"...Yes the crowd did not dream, when they put up the money,
That they would see a total eclipse of the Sonny"

Just ordered an eclipse filter for my camera to try to do a time-lapse photo series of the event. It came with viewing glasses. :geek:

The Eclipse weekend for me will be a four day affair. Friday - running sound at a nice downtown event (probably 1500-2000 folks?). Saturday attend the lighting of a new 10 year long modern art laser display across the river, Sunday attending the screening of Kubrick's 2001 at the Nick the local independent awesome movie theater, then Monday, for the eclipse going out to the country for a day party in a field and please let the sky be clear to see some celestial magic.

Sounds fun. I'm getting the ass end of this whole eclipse deal, I'm afraid. Way outside the path.

I'm getting a little tired of hearing about the eclipse. That, and I can't get the Bonnie Tyler song out of my head. It won't end. Blah.

There was a total eclipse in Bismarck, ND back in 1979. I was four years old. I looked right at the dang thing and said "Mom, why is the moon moving into the sun?"

My mom's response: "Don't be ridiculous. The moon only comes out at night."

I have to take my kids out of school for the eclipse. They're just going to lock them in and not let them watch otherwise.

QFT.

Here he are having about 75% of the sun covered at 10:15am (peak): I won't even be going outside until later... :fu

There will be plenty of stills and videos posted by people who braved nightmarish traffic to be in the totality path. Since I was not about to do that, I won't have the full experience (temperature drop, sudden wind, animals going crazy, sunsets in all directions, stars in the sky in the middle of the day, etc...), but so be it.
I'm gonna go low this time...

Best part of this eclipse? Not hearing about it anymore...can't wait.

Atlanta is just outside the totality or whatever, so it's been all we hear about lately.

Surprised you aren't going to Clemson to watch it. The difference in 95% and 100% is supposed to be shocking.

Clear skies here so far, I'm packing up to head out to our picnic party. :banana

I know a bunch of people are heading that way to watch it, but that sounds like a total shit-show. Traffic heading up and back is probably going to be a nightmare.

Had i REALLY been smart, i would have taken the day off and gotten a tee time. I think being on the course during the eclipse would be amazing.
