The Golf on TV forum

Postby legitimategolf » Mon Dec 01, 2014 11:37 am

As members of this forum, we are all practitioners of golf first and foremost. Yet there is a time and a season for everything--time to be born, a time to die, time to reap, time to sow, time to play golf, a time to sit on your ass and watch golf. And so on. This forum is for the talking about of the spectator sport that is golf. That includes all professional tour action (even including womens--that's right we are progressive here), big-time amateur competitions and even stuff like "Big Break" or long drive competitions (which I got sucked into watching yesterday). If it's golf, it's competition, and it's on TV, this is the place to yap about it.

We are a month into the 'real' season and time to recap what I've picked up so far.

The first 2 tourneys in Hawaii were actually commercials. Mark Rolfing spent countless minutes describing the beauty, landmarks, tradewinds, tides, parasailing, fishing, boating, ziplining and every other reason to visit there. Endlessly showing golfers and their families having the time of their lives. Every commentator mentions how fortunate and lucky to part of this great tour. Showing live golf was a side note.

Nice. Back in the northeast we are getting our asses kicked.

The Humana was pretty good. Saw a few golf shots. An exorbitant amount ("while we were away") by a select group of players. All in all not too bad.

Phoenix was horrible. Between the golf channel and CBS how many times do we have to hear about Tiger's collapse or the renovations on the course. Glowing. Spectacular. What else would they say, it sucks? How about 16? Did you ever envision this from the start? Then off to commercials. It amazes me when they come back live and still pitch shows coming up later. Slick. Jim Nance is a blathering bore. Can't wait for his endless leadup to each round at the Masters. And of course the standard "while we were away" phrase upon return. Show a couple shots and gone again.

And don't forget the f'ing rock story and the footage from 2001. Will never end. All this while golf is actually being played.

The GC has a pre tourney show. Golf Central. Why isn't this show on before play begins? Notah and Brandle explaining to me what happened yesterday is now irrelevant. Hell, golfers have been on the course for a couple hours. I don't care about their super bowl picks.

Randomly, I know someone (well, kind of - he's a friend of a friend and I met him a couple times) that is playing in the Farmer's. He's the head pro at a local country club named Chris Gilley and qualified in by winning a local PGA Pro tourney. We're hoping he makes the cut. The guy did make 2 aces on the same day on the same hole in separate rounds, that's something right?

Amen Ceebee. Let it flow through you. American TV golf programming--there is so much that is wrong with it. The whole golf central pre-game is a concept that defies common decency. Golf Channel, there's no way of knowing or measuring this, but it would not surprise me if their net effect on the popularity and appeal of the game was negative. Mother f'ers.

Oof, not so pretty. I think we've gone from (hoping he) 'makes the cut' to 'doesn't finish dead last'.

Has anyone watched any TV golf since September? Not me. I may try to watch the women's season ending event (what do they call it - Titleholders, maybe??). I secretly like how Stacy Lewis gets all red-cheeked and tight lipped when another of the ladies beats her.
Let's Play 36
GHIN Handicap: 7.8 … 9.2 … Let’s just say I am around a 14!

You should witness it in person from the scoring tent.
I will stand in the fairway, I want to be out of your range.

It's fun to watch a Stacy Lewis get redder and redder over the course of a round, but lately I am starting to pity her. She is on the wrong side of thirty now, and has been experiencing a lot of disappointing runner-up finishes over the last year plus. A lot, way more than her share. Her main foil Inbee Park not only continues to pile up the trophies, but she also has found marital bliss. That lucky bitch. Her other foil is a tireless teenage phenom who has already nearly equaled Stacy's career achievements, and is just getting started. Stacy is still the third pillar of lady-golf's "Big 3" as I like to call em, but I think she will be replaced soon, by either one of the new Koreans, or Lexi Thompson who seems poised to establish herself as undisputed top American.

About the other thing, yes. Golf on TV isn't really doing it for me anymore. Men's golf at least. How many times have you heard this past year: "the game is in great hands". Many, many, many, many times. In pro golf that's easily the phrase of 2015. Can't help but take it as an allusion to the ending of the Tiger Woods era. I am contemplating writing an op-ed about it actually. I am trying to be a fan of PGA Tour but the magic's not there. If that makes me less of a true fan of golf than some sort of cultish bandwagonesque front-running Johnny-come-lately Tiger Woods fanboy then so be it.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The tourneys of the so called 'wrap around season' give some relevance to four months before Hawaii and are set up for the second tier players that don't normally compete for the win in regular tour events. The Sony starts the real season. That's when the big boys start to show up.

Can't wait for the BS to start about how lucky everyone is for being on the Pacific Isles. Effers!

I haven't watched any. I got burned out a bit. I needed a break and now's the time to take it.
I think golf needs a break, like other sports.

I used to look forward to the Tiger Challenge thing in December since I used to attend back when it was in California, but not now, f'ing Tiger moved it to Florida.

CME Group Tour Championship is this weekend. Golf Channel Thursday-Saturday and ABC on Sunday (2:00 to 4:00). Not really pulling for anyone in particular. It would be nice to see Jennifer Song do well. She has always listed Ann Arbor, MI, as her home town although she has lived in many places.

Looka here, everyone's favorite Korean LPGA'er out of Ann Arbor shot a nice 68 in the first round, just two back. I was going to start a new thread for this tournament, but then I'd be sitting all by my lonesome in an empty thread and who needs that.

Here is the poop on Jennifer Song. Born in Ann Arbor, raised in Korea. So it's not like she was ever crossing fairways with Bkuehn at Huron Hills or whatever. Unfortunately she is not exactly Jenny from the block--not for Brian at least.

I regularly played golf with her father.

Well, okay, that guy I joined on the course 20+ years ago may not have been her father. And now that you mention it, he may not actually have been Korean. And technically I didn't play golf with him but accidentally hit into his group and he yelled at me.

Never mind.

Who Remembers the 1st "Skins Game"?

Postby bkuehn1952 » Thu Nov 26, 2015 9:22 am

Arnold, Jack, Gary, Tom. When was the last time they had a 4-some like that? Those first couple years were fun because the idea was new and the big names were willing to play.

I don't think my memories go back that far. Was probably too preoccupied with Star Wars actions figures and Atari anyways. But I do remember the days when Tiger Woods used to show up for a hit and a giggle. Even that seems like an age ago. Ah it was a simpler time. Before innocence was lost.

I feel like a mini rant today. I struggle with how the PGA tour changes tournaments names/sponsors all the time and then claims the tournament has been in existence for years. Today I heard them say that the defending champion of the WGC Mexico was Adam Scott who won last year at Doral. How did he win the WGC Mexico at Doral when Doral isn't in Mexico?

I am so also very tired of all the talk about OWGR and who is #1. Just another sign of too much media without enough to talk about. Who's number 1? It's simple, who has had the best last 12 months that no one would trade their record for? Right now that's Dustin Johnson. If Rory passes him this weekend, would DJ trade his past year for Rory's? No way. At one point Jordan Speith had won 4 or 5 tournaments with two majors over a 12 month period and wasn't number 1. Really?

I feel better now.

I hear you man. Don't give me no jive talk about Ben Hogan winning the Cialis Open. I am smart enough to know that prescription erection dysfunction pills did not even exist in Ben Hogan's day.

On the other hand they are in a tough spot. They can't go blathering on about the old girlfriends in front of the new girlfriend. At the very least not by name. But I hear what you're saying, they ought to find a tasteful middle ground. That's asking too much though.

Agreed. I think the middle ground should be to refer to the tournament by its generic name (e.g. the LA Open) instead of mentioning the current or previous corporate sponsor when referring to years past. The current sponsor doesn't want the previous sponsor to get free (actually paid for by the current sponsor) publicity, and it does not make sense to refer to current sponsors that didn't event exist 20 years ago when bringing these old results back up.

I dunno. If Dustin traded his past year with Rory he would be 11 million richer. Just a minor observance.
