2015 "The" Open

Post by legitimategolf » Thu Jul 16, 2015 2:46 pm

So far, everyone is following the script--Jordan, Dustin, Jason Day. Tiger too in his own inept way is fulfilling expectations at the bottom of the leaderboard. Rickie is not following the script however. This was supposed to be a big week for him.

Tomorrow will be fun to watch with the rain and wind.

I hope I wasn't the only one that set my alarm for 5am to wake up an 1-2 hours early to watch some golf before work.

I'm giving the win already to D Johnson. He could run away with it.

So who wants to take a rules quiz?

http://www.theopen.com/OpenQuiz

I did much worse than I thought. Only got a 50%, but not knowing the more obscure rules is why I have the USGA rule book on my phone. The good news is most of mine were the correct amount of penalty strokes, but many of errors had to do with replacing/dropping the ball correctly given the circumstances. Also there were a couple exceptions I did not know about.

Don't forget, they use R&A, not USGA rules.
I will stand in the fairway, I want to be out of your range.

How much difference is there between the 2 rule books? I thought the only difference was the way they did the handicap systems?

Or did my sarcasm meter fail?

It's Friday night though. Can't imagine a much better time and place to get pissed than watching the Open at St. Andrew's in wee hours of evening.

I got 13 out of 18.

I got these wrong:
1 (answered C - misinterpretation of the question description!)
5 (answered B)
12 (C)
14 (A)
18 (A)

Bit annoyed about the last one. Seems obvious now!

Yeah the last one pissed me off because it was more of a issue with the wording in the question than an understanding of the rule.

As did I. That's 72%, that means we understand the general spirit of the rules, and can generally be trusted. Jfish is borderline at best.

I am starting to see through the Open-at-St-Andrews hype, of which there are massive amounts. (I am sure it is great experience if you are there in person) When you put aside the prestige and the mysticism, the course tends to yield a lackluster event for the home viewer. Especially with the weather delays which, let's face it, are endemic to this place. Brutal winds are constantly talked up as being quintessential to the Scottish golf experience--until it comes to the pros. Then it's an intolerable situation. But I get it, a modern major needs greens that are ridiculously fast, and those surfaces are no longer compatible with high winds. Wind delays at the Open will become increasingly common I think. Aside from the 1st, 17th and 18th, the holes are kind of same-y. I think I am just frustrated from tuning into to ESPN and watching footage of balls on the green that may or may not be moving, and commentators wringing their hands and second-guessing the tournament committee. Just brutal. I kind of want to wash my hands of the whole thing and check the news on Monday.

I love your truth-telling. I think I share your opinion, and I kind of feel the same of links golf in general.

And it's now raining at St. Andrews, so looks even less aesthetic, and more miserable.

Still fun to watch though!

Basically at this point everyone who's anyone has a chance to win this thing. Except Tiger. Hopefully he and Rory are commiserating right now over a twelve pack of Stroh's.

Eddie Pepperell? Sounds like it could be the name of a pizza guy, Arthur Avenue, da Bronx. Ashley Chesters? Great stage name for an adult film actress. Who are these people???

After one round I was certain that Dustin Johnson was a lock. A lock, Jerry! I was so convinced. He was cruising, on a different plane of existence than everyone else. But my endorsement, as it always is, was the kiss of death. So far the only professional golfer to rise above my hex is Inbee Park.

I should clarify that I am not poopooing the course or the tournament itself. Just don't think it translates well to the tube. There's nothing necessarily wrong with that. I am envious of everyone who is there enjoying the Open.

Odds on favorite has to be Day. He has Tiger in his ear these days, and I think that will be the confidence boost he needs to get over the cliff. I am rooting for the amateur. How weird would that be. The uptight golf establishment could use a shake-up.
