Also if someone told me in November that tiger would play the us open, miss the cut, but not look like he's in pain. I would have taken it.

The thing that worries me about his last 3 tournaments. When your back is hurting the most miserable thing to do is spend a lot of time working on your putting. So if his back is hurting but not bad enough to wd I'd expect these exact results. Where his putting is just not there because he can't practice it.

Hopefully it's just a bad run with the putter. Time will tell.

He's striking the ball well overall. The course got him a few times with the excessive, closely mown areas around the greens and the nearly unplayable rough. Some of his bad shots were only off by a yard or two. Putting killed him. Again. He did not look bad otherwise. Many other very good players did as bad or worse.

Has anyone ever won the US open with a 4-putt on their card?

Bunch of disgusting creeps. Any civilized person would be well advised to stay the F away from the event.

I've proposed all along that Mickelson is an ordinary prick, and now he's just proven it.

I disagree, he proved he is an extraordinary prick.

I find this Dustin Johnson meltdown interesting--he is not playing all that badly. Just can't get it in the hole.

I think an even smarter move was to let the ball trickle off the green in whatever "impossible" spot and call an unplayable. It's only 1 stroke penalty, not 2. Then retry the original putt, this time knowing how fast it really is.

That said, i don't object to his move or the USGA decision to not DQ. I do object to the course set up though! :thumbdown

I hate Mike Davis.

If I were a member of shinnecock I'd sue the Usga. These greens are not coming back this year. They may have to be replaced.

It's so disgusting how he takes a nice course and destroys it.

Missed the Fowler and Fleetwood win bet, but did get Fleetwood before the tourney at 8-1 for Top 5. :thrust :yess

Preliminary look for Brit Open is Fleetwood at 28-1 to win.

I don't really get why everyone is pissed at Phil for intentionally breaking a rule for his precieved advantage? He didn't try to hide it or not take the penalty. This happens all the time in other sports.

Intentionally delay of game to give the punter 5 extra yards of field to work with. Intentionally icing a puck. Intentionally tackling a person in soccer to prevent a break away. Intentionally fowling people in basketball to save time.

I don't care he did that. I'm with sj though. Letting it roll out and declaring it unplayable would have been smarter.

Ok I went and looked at the rule. Now I changed my mind.

14-5.
A player must not make a stroke at his ball while it is moving.

It clearly states you must not... I assumed it was worded like "if a player hits a moving ball..."

Given the wording I think a DQ would have been appropriate.

I disagree Mr Fish. The rule 14-5 says: ... must not make a stroke at a moving ball. Penalty is 2 strokes. It couldn't be more clear. The caveat in there is the part about see rule 1-2 for a ball purposely stopped or deflected by player or caddie. EXCEPT that rule 1-2 explicitly says if there is any other rule that expressly covers a situation, that other rule applies, not 1-2. So 14-5 it is: 2 strokes.

Btw, did you guys see the FU mock celebration that Phil did today in the final round after making a (tough) up and down on the same hole, the 13th? Classic! Thumbs up, Phil! :thumbs

Assume Shinnecock was just another private course located in central NJ and never hosted a US Open. You have an opportunity to join. The dues are a bit high because they maintain a set of tees @ 7,500 yards and they tend to set the course up a bit on the difficult side with shaved green approaches, etc... Do you join?

Playing that course on a regular basis would be painful to me. Hitting wedge to a volcano-like green complex and hoping the ball doesn't run down the other side doesn't seem like fun, except for the occasional round when you are on vacation.
Let's Play 36
GHIN Handicap: 7.8 … 9.2 … Let’s just say I am around a 14!

Yeah it seemed brutal. I don't think I'd want to play it all the time. But I'm sure all the members travel around the Hamptons playing the various courses

I saw someone was talking to one of the local caddies after the 1st round, and he was asked what do the members do when the wind blows out of the direction that it blew in the 1st round, and his reply was that they played cards.

I'm not sure

14-5 clearly sounds like it's your obligation to not hit a moving ball. But if you happen to do it then it's 2 strokes. It doesn't come off to me like it's your option to either 1) not hitting a moving ball or 2) hit a moving ball and get a 2 stroke penalty.
