Old Ass Clubs

Post by legitimatebeef » Wed Apr 03, 2019 2:35 pm

I still use a TaylorMade V-Steel 5-wood, with steel f'n shaft!

I don't know how old it is. Circa 2005 maybe? I love it. I probably lose distance without a modern trampoline face or whatever, but I love the way it flies. Not too high. Also the sound and feel of contact, cannot be beat IMO.

Will probably keep using it until it can no longer be used anymore. I'm pretty sure that by economic criteria, the National Golf Foundation and the like would have serious hesitations about classifying me in the "avid golfer" category. I am guessing there are people out there who play golf 2-3 times a year and yet still spend more on golf per annum than I do. :ohyeah

A friend of mine just got an Olimar Trimetal 9 degree club from eBay for $30. It’s a club from the early 1990s. It looks like a 3 wood, with a small head even. So, it works from the deck too. He hits better, much better actually, than a modern driver, from a ball flight perspective.

I tried it for shits and giggles and it does not even go as far as my (5 years old) 3 wood. And my friend is like 40-50 yards longer than me with it and the same from the fairway. We are both about the same, at 220-225 with a modern driver, more depending on conditions. But when this Olimar club gets some roll, it seems to be rolling forever!

He says that it took him a while to get reacquainted with that club to hit it effectively, so the few swings I gave it are not reflective of anything, and he had one of those way back when... of course. :up
I'm gonna go low this time...

I hope to toss everything in the bag at some point this Summer and get a fitted set. I don't give a shit about the cost. I am officially (via my spouse) on the U.S. Government dole and fully intent to spend every last dime each month. The end of "saving for a rainy day" has come. I thank you all for your tax payments to keep me living in the style for which I intend to become accustomed.

Almost all my clubs are 2012 (Driver, 3 wood, irons, 2 wedges).

Oldest club in my bag is actually my 54* wedge, a 2009 Vokey Satin. I should probably replace it, since you're supposed to replace your wedges every decade or so.

Actually, my bag is old as shit and has holes in it. I bought it in 2006, used. It's a ratty old Golfsmith bag. I replaced it once with a Nike bag in 2008? but that bag was crap and broke in 2 yrs (every piece of Nike equipment I ever used was shite, btw), so I went back to the old bag.

The 2009 Vokey Spin-Milled is a great wedge, but has the old, non-conforming grooves (though as an Am, not playing at the highest levels, you are still good for another year before it is no longer conforming for you. However, 10 years? :o

I replace my 58* and 54* every year, and my 50* wedge every year and a half or so. My 54 and 58, which I use 90% of the time for chipping and pitching, are literally worn out within a season, between 150-200 rounds a year and as many days of practice. It is clear that I loose lots of check on chips and pitches by the end of a year's worth of use.

10 years? Wow.

Still using my trusty odyssey 2ball from what, 2001. Whatever the first year it came out. Couple vokey wedges from 2009. Faces pretty scarred and worn but still fine by my standards. Just re gripped them for the seventh time.
Tee it up!

So I think this is the "newest" old club I've ever had.

My oldest club is either my driver Ping G15 or my 4h which is a Titleist 912 I think. I'm not sure which one is older.

Prior to this I had a SW that I loved when I was in my 20's it was a 198x Wilson something or other. I loved that club but I did wear the groves out of it and after having it regroved 2 times I finally pitched it in the closet.
Keep it short stupid.

Right? Thanks man. I've talked about it a bunch, but can't pull the trigger. Analysis paralysis.

I have a Cleveland VAS putter that I got in 1997 that works it way in and out of my bag depending on green conditions. I tend to like it now when I know I am playing on slower greens.

Permanently in my bag is a 2007 Taylor Made Burner 4 hybrid. I also have the driver which makes appearances in my bag.
I will stand in the fairway, I want to be out of your range.

Oh man, for a second I thought you had the VAS irons. Those things are legendary...

I love my Taylormade Super Burner 3 hybrid, favorite old club. I almost bought 2-3 others off ebay just to fill in the gaps.
ALl my clubs are pretty old, except my putter from 2014 and my Driver from last year.

I have the 2nd gen M2 3Hybrid, but have thought about ordering the 07 burner 3H just because of the way I love the 4h.

I wonder how much of the club is in the shaft, the shafts make such a difference in the feel etc.
I can't wait until I can go and get fit.
