I'm hooked on this new band. They were recommended to me after our last gig when a guy said our band reminded him of these guys. These guys are badass. I hear tons of influences and similarities, but yet they sound unique.

We opened the vault this morning. "The Mavericks" - an early CD "Music for All Occasions". Features Flaco Jimenez on one of the tunes.

Re: ... currently listening to:
I realized over the weekend that music is dead. Not just rock, which died years prior. Music as a popular form of art and entertainment, dead. Maybe it'll revive at some point but at the moment, it is dead. It is a dead art form. The internet helped to kill it. Not to say that sundry individuals are not still making good music here and there, of course they are. But on the whole, people simply do not need music as they once did.

To say nothing of future generations and their ability to create and enjoy music.

George Martin's son done remixed Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in stereo, using the original, pre-bounce 4-track master tapes. I know what you are thinking--holy crap he did what? It's true! I was so excited I actually went to a brick and mortar retail store and bought it on Compact Disc. It sounds great. You hear new layers of instrumentation; even some chord voicings that were previously buried in the mix get revealed.

Going to a "Pink Martini" concert next Tuesday. I sure the UMS did not screw me over with lousy seats or I plan to ask for my $$ back.

ELO? Were you even born when they put out this album? I have some ELO vinyl and it is ancient.

I'm the same age as that album. Feh. Music was just better pre-computers. Digital technology was the beginning of the end.

I was a big fan of ELO when I was a kid due to the influence from my older brothers. Used to stare at the LP covers. Out of the Blue, Eldorado, etc

Well hopefully as a grown up you still appreciate the production and arrangement of ELO records. I say they are fantastic. The guitar/piano/bass/drums with strings and a bit of Moog, you can't really beat that. It's sort of like picking up where the Beatles left off with Abbey Road. The Beatles were the greatest, most inspired rock band ever but they hated each other by that time. Abbey Road is great because of their talent and experience, but I don't find the music especially inspired.jfurr wrote:I was a big fan of ELO when I was a kid due to the influence from my older brothers. Guess I am a fan of Jeff Lynne in general, like his work with the "threetles" and Tom Petty too. He gets such a great sound IMO.

Agree, man. Lynne def took up (eh - copied? that's okay though) where Beatles left off, mixed with Bee Gee's. (I'm a Bee Gee's fan - all of it).legitimatebeef wrote:Well hopefully as a grown up you still appreciate the production and arrangement of ELO records. I say they are fantastic. I've been listening to the Hard Day's Night Beatles stuff tonight. Really focusing in on the guitar chord inversions and how they stack up the songs together. Amazing.

Wow, great call on ELO. I've been listening to a lot of ELO lately and love it all. Never listened to them too much when i was younger; never too late though.

Amen, never too late. I never had anyone cool in my life to tell me about good music so I have to discover everything for myself, it takes time.jattruia wrote:Wow, great call on ELO. I am fully onboard the ELO spaceship these days. It's about all I listen to. Some of the greatest music ever made.

Been listening to bunch of old Oasis b-sides. Those fucks. Some of their best stuff is on the b-sides. Still don't quite understand the logic of that but whatever. On the b-sides you see a different side of Oasis than the oft-ponderous hits and album cuts.

We will often put on "Pandora" while preparing dinner. "Traditional Italian" music, "Pink Martini", "Frank", etc... It is always illuminating how Pandora decides what fits into a selected category.
Should I be embarrassed to admit we use Pandora (the free version)??
