Buddy trip 2018

Yep. Courses booked for the week. One of my friends (also a golfing friend) is coming along for the weekend rounds. There are two new courses for me of the five days. Cool!

Who, what, when, where and.....why the f**k do I have to ask? How about a little more info for Christ's sake!?

For the record, what you basically said is "Yep. Going on vacation. A new friend is joining me for part of the trip. At a couple places I haven't been before. I'm excited."

I'm on pins and needles waiting for your reply. :cmon

HAHAHAHA -- sorry for being brief. It's the return of the annual "GFO" golf trip I do with some work friends and others at the south strand of the SC myrtle area. Actually it's mostly Pawleys Island. Since I'm not doing any tournaments or leagues (or... regular golf) this is the highlight of my golf play each year now. Five days of play - two "Ryder cup" days then three days of handicapped rounds aggregate score on the quest for the green(wish) jacket. And a lot of relaxing and stuff. We have 16 players for the weekend and a dozen for the weekday rounds. our group consists of players in the range of around 6 hcp to 33...

Buddy Trip 2018

Post by jfurr » Tue Apr 03, 2018 10:28 pm

Heading out Saturday morning bright and early for the GFO again. Two days of "Ryder Cup" matches, then 3 days of handicapped stroke play. I feel as unprepared as ever, except for the alcohol tolerance. I feel I can hang with them all in the cups. Actually I do have one and only one song/game thought. I want to not suffer from chipping yips. And believe it or not it was from one of the highest hcp players in the group who mentioned a tip from the old Phil Mickelson videos that I think I'm going to mentally use. It was : a) always keep your weight on your forward foot, and b) never let your club go past your hands until after impact.

I have no idea if those are real statements, but what the hell

Saturday night the celebrating got a bit wild for some of us... ended up at the tiny local bar on the corner singing karaoke.

Cold and windy yesterday morning with an early tee time, it warmed up some but my game never did. Lost my singles match.

Today was the first round of stroke play. Solid cold rain the whole round and challenging course, but it drained well. Only a few spots with puddles and the greens stayed pretty true - no rooster tails. Played relatively good on the front but had some blow up holes on the back and shot a 102. I’m 7 off the lead after day one. Kicked everyone’s ass on the long drive hole though by about 60 yards. We have a new young guy who plays off a 4.2 that should have won that but must have missed the fairway. Tomorrow is a lengthy course and I hope to move up into the top four at best.

GFO Day 2. We are playing Myrtlewood Palmetto this afternoon, which I think was the course where we had an Oober World Am Round warm-up one year, with Gio, MadMX, me and I can’t remember who else it was Nathan, BirdiX, and someone else...

The forecast shown no rain but it’s low 50’s and windy. Several of the holes are along the intracoastal waterway.

Two birdies and a few pars etc, but towards the end of the round disintegrated and took a triple and a quad. Ended up with a 94. Pretty sure not good enough to move anywhere on the board. Will see after the computations are complete.

:fuckall I’m only thru seven holes but I’m so far behind there is no hope. On the third hole I was center of FW with 140 to a back pin. 8 iron Left of green bounced hard 25 yards off the green. Duffed three chips the 3 putted.

Just took a 7 on a 155y par 3 from 19 yards off the green. Two skilled chips zig zag over the green. I cannot chip. It’s either bladed or chunked. I missed the ball a few times today also.

However from 100-125 yards I’m all over the flag with well struck full swings. My long game is okay. Basically I can play like either a single digit or a 40 hcp from shot to shot or hole to hole.

And yes, cocktail hour started 3 holes ago.

Ah! Those are not skilled chips... :lolz

Seriously though, the key to chipping is a narrow stance slightly open and absolutely making sure to start with the weight forward. There is no time to transfer (and it is not advisable to transfer weight on such a short shot) so you preset your weight forward so that you can catch the back of the ball, instead of hitting behind it, the cause of both skulled and chunked chips, depending on whether the club bounces on the ground and into the ball or not. There is more to it (hinging or not; ball in the back, middle or front of the stance; rotation of the core or not) depending on what kind of chip/pitch you want to make, but they all start with the weight on the lead leg (maybe 80%?)...
I'm gonna go low this time...
