Random thoughts
Whatever happened to "love it or leave it"? Nobody says that anymore. But it is just as relevant a sentiment now as it was in the 80s or whenever. Is what I say.

Re: Random thoughts
I just realized that I only own/wear polo shirts because of society's expectations. I do not really care for them. Would much rather wear a t-shirt every time. I don't really feel like myself in a polo shirt.

I don't feel comfortable in public unless I'm wearing a collar.
Why do so many car models end with the letter A?

Re: Random thoughts
People often say "You get an "A" for effort!"
But isn't the original saying "an E for effort"? As in, "Well, you are so off the mark that the usual letter grade scale from A to F doesn't even apply, but hey, you at least tried and so I am throwing you a bone of recognition."
I think the mutation of this little bon mot says a lot about the crumbling values and integrity structure of our modern day participation trophy society. On a subconscious level people actually believe that an "A" grade--the highest mark of excellence on the scale--should be given out just because somebody made an earnest attempt, quality of the result be damned.

Re: Random thoughts
I recently read that current US Women's Open champion In Gee Chun was inspired to take up golf as a child when at a driving range, her dad's friend mocked and ridiculed her very first novice attempts at hitting the ball.
Moral question. Should the dad's friend now feel like a complete ass because he ridiculed some poor elementary school kid who'd never swung a golf club before, when it turns out that that kid, given half a chance to figure things out, would go on to develop a golf talent of the highest order and win the greatest championship in women's golf?
Or should he be proud of himself for setting in motion the young girl's golf career and all the fame and riches that came along with it?

He should have been kicked in the balls for doing that in the first place...last thing you do to a child.
Throw me another ball will ya!

Today I learned that when I'm listening to techno music, I can tell when a new song is changing because the colors change.

There is an excessive heat warning in effect for the Phoenix area today. I prefer to call it August.

After a trip to the grocery store, a cup of yogurt got left in the bag. A little over 24 hours passed before I found it. I put it in the fridge overnight, then I ate some. It tasted fine. I am still here motherf'ers.

Re: Random thoughts
I was at the beach in Long Island yesterday. There was a tubby guy camped out in front, and I found myself getting all pissed off at the mere sight of him. I am not an anti-fat guy, I respect people's right to be fat. Then I noticed how, despite being a tub of lard, the guy had no rear end to speak of. Again, this is far from any of my business and it's not really like me to have such a bad reaction to some random person's weird physique. But eventually I figured out what was making me so mad. The guy was trying to rock some low-waisted, i.e. skinny guy style swim trunks despite having a prodigious belly. Combined with the startling lack of ass, it mean that his trunks were perpetually on the verge of falling down and exposing genitals, and he was constantly having to hitch them up. A stomach-turning sight that would rankle any normal person. So I am not that judgmental after all. And in the end, I learned a life lesson about the importance of wearing clothes that fit properly.

Re: Random thoughts
The other day I was looking at beach umbrellas on Amazon, and one of the reviews lambasted a particular model that exhibited "little resilience in the face of the most gentle and fundamental challenges." I laughed almost to the point of crying. I'm not sure why. Maybe I have been searching for those exact words for my whole product-consuming life.

Probably not. At best you are the 27th man?srogers13 wrote:Are you really DMAN if your personalized license plate is DMAN27?
I have never seen so many personalized plates as I have seen since moving to Virginia. It seems like every 3 or 4 cars has one. My sister-in-law and her husband have their initials, which makes their plate look like a 2 year old trying to recite the alphabet. AEC DBC. I want to take a picture and send it to the school board with a caption of "core competency alphabet?"
I saw one the other day that slipped past the DMV.
CKGBLR - I'm not sure if they were describing themselves or if that was directed at the people behind them?
And my favorite I've seen.

It occurred to me the other day, that I don't think I've ever attended a luncheon.

Re: Random thoughts
When I was in Minnesota this past week, I found myself saying "it turned out to be a pretty nice day" on Wednesday after the rain stopped and the sun came out for about 20 minutes. You will never hear anyone say that in Phoenix. Every day starts out nice. And then the sun comes out and screws it all up.

Re: Random thoughts
It dawned on me over the weekend, that most likely the last great band of our time will end up being U2. No need to argue with me over this, I am not even a big U2 fan. It was just a Nostradamus-type of vision I had.
Right now, people are understandably kind of sick of their shit, but I am talking about generations into the future. Their catalog of hits, with Bono's soulful and expansive melodies and the Edge's inimitable and huge-sounding guitar riffs, will stand the test of time. Even more so considering the steady decline of mainstream music that started after the turn of the century. Like them or not, they have a way of turning simple chord progressions into grandiose songs that sort of take you on these little 4-5 minute emotional journeys. Take that song "With or Without You" for example. The entire song repeats a dead simple D-A-Bm-G progression, but to the untrained ear there is nothing repetitive about the whole thing. It starts as a whisper and ends with big, soaring refrains. The chord progression never changes once. Bono and the Edge, they have a gift. They will end up as the modern day Jagger and Richards, or Page and Plant. They will probably still be selling out stadiums twenty years from now. U2 will stand tall over every other musical act of the 80s/90s/00s.
I will get off the pulpit now.
