Wearing Rain Gear

Post by bkuehn1952.2 »

I rarely play in a steady rain. I have/had a ProQuip rain suit purchased in 2013 (prior to my Scotland trip). It worked great for a number of years but I noted recently that the suit was not really working. Last rainy tournament I was pretty soaked.

Tyically, on a day where there might be a few brief showers, I rarely wear the rain pants. It has to be a steady rain before those go on. So I figured they might still be usable. With that idea, I just purchased a rain jacket replacement. Tested out the full suit yesterday. Walked 3.5 miles in a steady rain with winds around 10 mph. The rain pants are kaput, too. The rain jacket performed admirably.

I hesitate to spend a lot on the rain pants. Likely no Goretex or high performance rain gear. Hopefully I can find a deal floating around.

Anyone else play in the rain? Advice?

I hate getting wet with a passion so if it looks like rain I usually won't play.

I do have a Nike Stormfit suit in my bag just in case I get caught out and it seems to do the job just fine.

I presently have at least five (off the top of my head) different, relatively newer FJ Hydrolight rain jackets and then one single pair of FJ black rain pants i purchased probably 12 or 13 years ago. All keep me dry. Some of the jackets I wear even when it's not raining. They are just too stylish to ONLY wear in wet weather. The rain pants have certainly gotten a workout over the last decade or more, yet still look good and continue to perform well. I'll typically have to put them on 10 or 15 times on average, each year.

I have rain gear but would never intentionally play in a steady rain, I have occasionally played in sprinkles. My rain pants I’ve worn maybe two times - hate playing in them. My rain jacket, maybe 5 times, again hate swinging in the thing, unless I take the sleeves off but then you are getting wet. I’ve owned a pair of rain gloves for probably 2-3 years, but never used them until recently because they were never in my bag when I needed them. When I used them about a year ago it was a eureka moment. Now they stay in my bag. Can’t believe I waited so long.

I bought my rain suit 10 years ago. My buddy and I were suffering through a NJ winter and we targeted an opening day because we needed to golf. When the day got near, it was forecasted to rain before we finished so I bought the rain suit. The rain actually held off until the 18th hole.

I few weeks later Ms. Bogey bought me a birthday present to help me play “cold” golf for my 50th. She bought me this expensive jacket I didn’t like. She said the only other jacket at the golf store was this awful FJ jacket where the arms came off. So I showed her my jacket. She said, “when did you get that?” I replied, “I’ve had it for a while.”
