Link didn't work for me, but I thought it was pretty much common knowledge Trump cheats at golf (and marriage, and probably everything else he does).

It's weird. The URL is fine but you can't link to it. Probably Trump got Mick Mulvaney or some other shitlicker to fuck with the golf.com server or something.

Ok this is a great example of my issue with journalists. I have no argument for the context of the article as I've never played with him. Also this matches everything I've ever heard. Cool he is a big cheater, we all get it (ok some people will defend him).

But what the hell is going through Rick Riley's mind when it adds this...
So if it’s the same, if everybody’s cheating, he doesn’t see it as really cheating.”

Okay, but …

1. a) Everybody isn’t. Except for an occasional mulligan on the first tee and accepting a gimme (a short conceded putt) from an opponent, 85 percent of casual golfers play by the rules, according to the National Golf Foundation.

The issue I have with this, is in reality it adds NOTHING to the article, it's nothing more than fluff. So why bother putting it in there? All it does is give sane people an argument that the entire article is as bogus as this one line.

If you are going to cite some type of statistic you need to back it up with something factual, or risk having your article become toilet paper.

Personally I find it really hard to buy 85% of golfers play by the rules. I bet I could count on one hand how many people I've played with over the last 2 years who played by the rules. Hell I will admit I don't play by the rules 50%+ of the time over those 2 years. I frequently used the flag stick (specially 2nd half of last year) when putting, if I didn't have time to putt before my round I'd roll a ball on the 1st green while waiting for others to get a sense of speed, I am pretty sure in my last round I dropped from shoulder height. I'm sure I've done other things intentionally or unintentionally as well. Yes I pride myself on keeping a real score, but I'm not dumb enough to say I don't cheat either. Maybe I should be better about these things, but that isn't my point. My gripe is with the sloppy reference thrown in the article for no reason.

That's not Reilly's thought, it's a quote from some guy at Winged Foot who has played with Trump, and the quote is him speculating on Trump's own personal rationale for cheating.

Oh I see, you just didn't like a statistic being cited improperly. I should've known.

So I'm by no means a journalism/english major so I could be wrong on this and I'll defer to you if you tell me I'm wrong.

That being said the way I read it was the winged foot members quote ends with "he doesn't see it as really cheating." and Rick Riley's facts statistics puffery starts with "Okay, but..."

I agree in that case, it is a very liberal interpretation to say 85%. There is a qualification there though, to be fair: except for occasional mulligan and gimme putt. And that's probably consistent with the average golf.com reader's definition of "playing by the rules". In other words the average golfer is a cheater, what else is new. I don't think it's useful to get bogged down in the details of a Rick Reilly article. It's just fun to poke fun at weird people, and Trump is a weird people: he has this strange, childish need to feel like he is the bestest, all the time. Even he must know that he has to resort to all kinds of chicanery and cheating in order to feel like he is bestest. That's remarkable. Most people need to do something the right way, if they are going to be proud of themselves for it. But not Trump. I mean, look at this expression. "Mommy, I'm the best!"

Wow, you can cut the indignation in here with a knife since I posted this Trump shit. Look, I didn't write it. Golf.com did. So go write your angry MAGA letters to them. Once again, the mean nasty media has turned on <sniffle> your president. As for me, I am truly sorry I posted this here without some sort of stern trigger warning.

There is just so much to say and I don't have time right now. I'll just say for now, none of his lying and cheating surprises me. I knew Marla Maples personally in the late 80s. I knew (from HER mouth) she was sleeping with him BEFORE the world knew, and that she had a luxury apartment in which he kept her. I also worked in NYC on Madison Avenue in the early-mid 80s and dealt with him indirectly, and saw the way he cheated and stole from people. MY OPINION, that he is scum started way back then. It has only grown over time.

Interesting article. It backs up the claim made several years ago by Samuel L. Jackson that Trump cheats. At the time, it seemed a bit outrageous to me that he would make that accusation public. I owe SLJ an apology.

So you assumed that Samuel L. Jackson just made up that stuff about Trump cheating at golf.

No. I figured there was an issue. I just did not think it was appropriate to talk about it publicly. Clearly the "cheating" is not a one off situation or a misunderstanding.

I was alluding to Samuel L. Jackson. Personally I don't think there was anything untoward about him saying that stuff publicly. If anything silence on such a matter is even worse. Anyways he is far from the only public figure to straight up accuse Trump of cheating at golf. I'm not sure why he is suddenly such a bone of contention between me and BK. I guess this is just a contentious story to begin with. I thought it was innocuous though. Like people make fun of Obama for being left-handed, or black, or whatever. Don't see me getting all huffy about it, and I actually voted for that guy, TWICE.

I was going to stay out of this thread but my boss, who knows that I am obsessed with golf, just came in and gave me the book as a gag gift for my birthday. So I will know all in the future. Lucky me.
