A lot of golf - 200+ Holes of golf in 6 days

Post by bkuehn1952 » Fri Feb 28, 2020 9:29 pm

I was invited to join seven other golfers for six days of golf in Reunion, FL. Tomorrow is our last day. We have played 36 holes each of the past 5 days and have another 36 scheduled for Saturday. I am really surprised I have survived this golf marathon. I had no idea of the golf schedule when I accepted the invitation.

We actually only played 12 holes on Wednesday because of a torrential rain storm in the mid-afternoon. Plus our matches did not always go 18 holes. A couple times we stopped after 16 or 17 holes.

My play has been spotty but it has been fun. We play alternate shot match play in the morning and stroke play in the afternoon with a "game" superimposed on the play. We all play our own ball and have teams with variations on best ball.

It has been a lot of fun even if it has also been exhausting. Home on Sunday and I don't plan on playing again for a while. :nope

You've made seniors everywhere, proud. Myself included. You go, old man! :up
How was Reunion? Conditions? Did you stay in one of the units there? In bed by 9? ;)

The organizer owns a home on the Nicklaus course. 8 bedrooms and 8.5 bathrooms. Everyone had their own bedroom with bathroom. A couple guys bought all the groceries and cooked dinner every evening. Simple breakfast at the house and we made sandwiches to eat between rounds. We each paid a 1/8th share of the food and a house cleaning fee. My share was $170. :thumbs

And yes, I was in the bedroom by 9:00pm every night.

The Reunion courses are interesting and difficult. The Watson course has 178 bunkers and the count is accurate since it seemed like I was in every one. Palmer is probably the most playable. Nicklaus is tough and plays longer than the yardage unless one is capable of blasting it over the bunker complexes. I wasn't.

Course conditions were good but not great. Nicklaus was the best conditioned. Lots of subtle breaks on all the greens made it hard for me to get it close or make putts. Green speeds were moderately quick. Few players rake the bunkers, which is pretty sad. The sand is a nice firm limestone, I think.

Prices in the clubhouse are ridiculous. At the end of Day Six I bought the only player older than me and myself a can of beer. $14.50 before tip for two cans of beer to go. :facepalm

On my way home to the Frozen Mitten. My live-in maid reports it will be 45 degrees with a foot of snow on the ground from the past week. Sigh.

An 8 bedroom/8.5 bath home? Nice little place.

$170? At that rate, you couldn't afford NOT to go. (Just don't buy your elders beer next time.)

Sounds like a fun time.

... Nice little place.

The home is actually relatively modest compared to some of the castles surrounding the courses. We also paid for golf above and beyound the $170 food/cleaning cost. $75/$40 each day for golf. $115 x 6. Which was a deal compared to the rack rates but still a good chunk of money.
