2024-2025 Winter Support Group

Post by bkuehn1952.2 »

Yesterday I played what is possibly my last round of 2024. Toured our city's executive course (5,100 yards, Par 67) on a lovely late November day (45 degrees, cloudy). The bag and push cart are going into the basement today. Extended outlook is temperatures in the low 30's during the day and 20's at night.

Deviating wildly from my golf game, our other city course has a new occupant. During a recent walk (course is closed for the year) I noted some construction work.

The beaver is attempting to create a new water feature at Leslie Park Golf Course.

Sorry to hear that. I used to miss out on golf due to winter too but now I can hardly fathom it. I am soft. Over here if it drizzles for a day or two I start to get despondent.

The shortness of days is getting to me harder than ever. I think it is partly old age, and also partly from living in the country. Boy does it get dark out here. In the big city the encroaching darkness was always countered by a strong sense of festivity at this time of year. More people around, more retail activity, tinsel and shit everywhere you look. Church bells ringing, Christmas trees for sale on the sidewalks. Over here it is dark, desolate and quiet. There is beauty in that. But I am eagerly awaiting the solstice. Because lately I just feel tired and low energy all the time.

One of our grandsons is spending a semester aboard in Vasteras, Sweden. The sun rose today at 8:41am. It set at 2:54pm. Another 10 days until the winter solstice. Ugh. 2:54pm and he isn't really that far north.

You would think that is not good for the human condition. Yet people endure it just fine evidently. Certainly something to think about while I am moaning about the short days. I looked it up and discovered that by moving from NYC to Ojai, I gained like twenty more minutes of daylight. We have it good here.

I am really experiencing it lately though, since I have become an early bird spaz. As early as six o'clock, which means hanging out in darkness for an hour. The other day I went out early to gather yard waste for trash day and I needed a mega flashlight. Being up and about before daybreak is very new to me, still getting used to it. I was a night person most of my life. But out here in the country, it seems proper to get up early and get all the available sun.

As I age I hate the darkness and I hate the cold. I guess I'm becoming a grumpy old man. Fortunately it is lovely here at least 50% of the days, even December and January.
