Best Shot of the Month

My September was a bit truncated by a 2 week visit to Sweden and Denmark. So the best shot goes all the way back to September 4th. It was the second (last) day of the Livonia City Championship. The leader of the "Super Senior" flight had shot a 71 gross the first day. 2nd place was held by someone who shot 78. There were several of us tied for 3rd at 79. We were all playing for second place.

Day 2's opening hole was #10, a 411 yard dogleg right par 4. I hit a very solid drive up the right side of the fairway. I was a little concerned it may have leaked right and I could be blocked by trees. When I got to my ball, I had only 150 yards to the middle of the green and it was sitting perfectly. A nice approach, a cautious 1st putt from 10 feet (downhill with a 2 foot break left) and a tap in got me a par on the #2 handicap hole. From there I shot a solid 76 and lost by 8 shots.



p.s. I finished in 2nd by 7 shots over the guy in 3rd. The winner and I each shot 76. Everyone else was in the 80's. I think I will use the $140 gift certificate for a pair of golf shoes. Oh, yes, that drive on #10 ... I think I got some assistance from the cart path.

Towards the end of one of my worst golf scores in years - +17 over par despite having 9 GIR's. A round that included the following:
- 5 looks at birdie under 10 feet. Every putt looked in three feet from the hole - no birdies
- A wedge from 60 yards one hopped into the pin, then bounced 30 feet from the hole
- 3 very well struck, I thought I had a great shot, mystery irons:
- one over the green despite no attempt to club up into a 20 mph wind
- one 30 yards short into the hazard
- one seemed to stop on the green, only to roll off into a hazard
- multiple bad shots beyond belief and some very unlucky lies

On a 365 par 4 I popped up my hybrid tee shot. I didn't even laser the flag as my only hope was to hit a great 5W near the green and hope for an up and down. I did laser the flag after my shot, 228 yards, to which I was 8 feet past the hole. Yes there was a helping wind and some roll involved, but easily my longest shot since moving here. The putt? The closest of the five birdie tries, but no it didn't go in.

On a terrible day for golf, the fourth consisted of a great drive then a 9i from 138. Saw the ball bounce on the green but couldn't see if from there due to a bunker, but walked up to find myself less than two inches from hole. Rest of the day was total trash after that - way too windy.

February had only 3 rounds. My trip to Hilltop had some lovely shots and some horrendous ones. Lovliest was the 3-wood into the wind to the 187 yard par-3 green. Such a silken swing and I glanced up and a slight draw was headed for the hole. Stopped 10 feet away and I couldn't coax the ball into the hole but that takes nothing away from the tee shot.

Been lucky enough with the weather to get out at least a couple times a week. Had some good shots but nothing spectacular till the other day. Around 50* and breezy. Started on 10. Ho hum 40 at the turn. Playing decently. Like any other round, giving shots away from short approaches but putting well. On the 8th tee, par 5 playing 454 yds. My 17th hole, the wind was at my back. I tattooed my tee shot between the fairway bunkers. Too my surprise 188 to the pin. This green is heavily bunkered in front. No way I could carry over and hold. The pin was right front. Only landing area was apron to the right or lay up. F that.

Now I have walked off this hole with anything between birdie and quadruple bogey. Almost 600 rounds and only been in this position once before, my decision was easy. Give it a go.

I hammered a 5w. Flight was right on target. Ended up on apron pin high 25’. Decided to putt as anything can go wrong chipping. Uphill left to right. Figured easy birdie. I hit it. The pace and line were good. As it climbed to the peak it turned right and died in the cup. Best 3 shots I’ve put together in some time.

Early candidate for May:

The 6th hole at our Crooked Oak course is a par 5 with a long skinny green. This picture doesn’t do it justice. There’s a front level of the green, then a hump up and down to a second level, then another hump up and down to a third level with a sharp drop to the left in the back. There’s two large bunkers along the left side of the green. The front is dead with a back pin and the back with a front pin. I'm sure the picture doesn't do it justice.

My first two shots Friday left me with a nice direct angle to the green, pin in the back left. With the flag back from 117, I thought I’d hit a nice easy gap wedge to the back center of the green and hope that it caught the sloper and run toward the flag.

Instead, I hit a total ground ball. Of course, the first thought is have enough to make the green, but no question about that, and then will it hold the green. As the ball neared the green it drifted left towards the front bunker. As it went up the slope, it mysteriously shifted right away from the bunker and over the first hump where it momentarily disappeared. It reappeared going over the second hump, now drifting towards the back bunker when it again magically turned right and over the hump without going into the second bunker.

When I got to the green, the ball was 10 feet below the hole. Couldn’t have hit a better shot in 20 tries. Of course, since it was a BS pre-birdie shot, I made the putt for a totally BS birdie.
